Where To Start When Your Health Is WAY Off Track

Where to begin rebuilding your health?

 

On a fairly regular basis, I meet with people who feel their health is SO far off track that they really can’t fathom how on earth to get it back. They’re so overwhelmed that they can’t see where to begin. Maybe you’ve been there.

Maybe you’re there.

I was there a few years ago, after my mom passed away. Not everything was horrible… but things sure were discombobulated for ME.

In that case, I made a list of 13 things that would dramatically help support my mental, emotional, and physical health. Then, I intentionally set about ‘scheduling’ the action steps stemming from these 13 areas into my overall routine.

That’s what worked for me.

Rarely do I meet someone who is eager to create their own list of over a dozen lifestyle elements that they need to act upon and improve! That would cause further overwhelm in many cases.

So, when consulting with someone who’s in a state of overwhelm and experiencing “paralysis by analysis”, I start small.

The 3 recommendations I make first in order to help someone get back on track are:

  1. Fuel up with healthy foods first
  2. Become an active mover
  3. Schedule your priorities and “me time”

 

1. Fuel up with healthy foods first.

This means, give your body (your cells) what they truly NEED throughout the day. They need clean (non-toxic) sources of fats, protein, and fresh fiber in the form of veggies and fruit. They need water. They need probiotics. That’s a great start.

So, imagine at every meal (and snack), adding one or two healthier choices… even going so far as to make these the central focus of that meal or snack. Add some veggies, or a salad. Have some protein with your breakfast. Have fruit with protein as a snack. Begin incorporating more traditionally prepared foods, like fermented foods and beverages.

Here’s a very simple example. Want pizza? Have a healthy salad FIRST. Now, you’ve got less room for pizza… so, if you’re listening to your body, you should eat less pizza! Plus, you’ve just instantaneously made that meal healthier by adding the salad. Want junk? Not before you’ve provided healthy, beneficial fuel for your body.

When you focus on adding the good things first, you tend to crowd out the bad stuff, leaving less physical and mental room for it.

It’s tough for me NOT to recommend that someone address their toxic choices right away, too, since these can be SO very sabotaging! So, a close second in the nutrition department is to reduce toxic choices – BUT, for many in the overwhelmed state, they need a bit of time to gain momentum and confidence in the “good choice making” area first.

Once they find that groove, and their meals, snacks, and beverage choices are incorporating far healthier choices than they previously were, it can be less of a mental leap to cut out some of the toxic garbage. Then, it’s time to reduce artificial sweeteners, bad fats, junk food, fast food, pop & energy drinks, and the boatload of sugar from ALL sources (including grains) that most North Americans consume!

See why we start off with ADDING THE GOOD?? This list of nutrition choices to avoid could send somebody right off the deep end!

 

2. Become an active mover.

This area is easier to describe. Start moving!

I don’t care what it looks like or how it compares to anyone else. It doesn’t mean you need to join a gym, take a class, hire a trainer, sign up for a race, or buy expensive workout gear. Just start MOVING… consistently!

Since movement fuels brain function (we call this “proprioception”), it’s beneficial to move in some way every day. This doesn’t mean “work out” every day. It means MOVE. Walk, stretch, play, exercise, dance, do yoga, go swimming, throw in a little “Elvis pelvis”, do some knee bends or knee raises, do some jumping jacks, climb up and down stairs a few times… there are so many varieties of motion. Just do something each day… become a more active person.

FIVE minutes of movement is better than NO minutes! Really. No excuses.

Once you find your groove in this area, then you can begin incorporating more specific (perhaps goal-oriented) types of movement and exercise, like strengthening, resistance, fat burning, cardio conditioning, sports-related, or ‘training’ movement in a way that makes sense for your lifestyle.

For starters, commit to moving every day in some way, whether it’s 5 minutes or an hour. It’s a fantastic feeling to check that off your to-do list each day, knowing you just provided fuel for your brain and did something really positive for your body.

Motion is life!

 

3. Schedule your priorities and “me time”.

We all benefit by carving out time in our busy schedules for “me time”. This is the time we set aside for the activities that nurture our souls, so to speak. This is time for us to chill out, recharge, and talk nicely to ourselves! It’s also dedicated time to proactively offset the effects of stress. Obviously, this can look very different for each and every one of us. It’s not as important WHAT you do during this time, but rather how it fuels you and how it makes you feel.

Examples here are: quiet time for reflection, meditation, prayer, journaling, breathing exercises, reading, affirmations, time in nature, spending quality time with loved ones, or going out and doing something you truly enjoy.

Be intentional about this time. If there’s something (or someone) you say is a priority in your life, then schedule that as a priority!! You know what happens when you don’t create the time for the most important things in your life… time slips away. This can leave us feeling stressed, depressed, unhappy, resentful, or like something is consistently ‘missing’ from our lives.

Does any of that sound healthy? Nope. Sounds to me like any of these emotions might keep us firmly stuck in a state of overwhelm.

There’s nothing magical about our human physiology that will allow us to ignore our mental, emotional, spiritual, and social health and NOT suffer the stressful repercussions. We need to intentionally FUEL this area of our life as well.

When you’re in a state of overwhelm and feel directionless, it can be very empowering to begin a new, balance-enhancing ritual in this area of your life. Figure out who and what are most important to you, then make sure you’re creating the quality space and time for them in your schedule. (Remember to include yourself on that list of who’s important and needs your dedicated time!) Be intentional. Also, be sure you’re intentionally creating the time on a regular basis for off-setting the effects of stress.

 

As you begin to add these positive choices in nutrition, movement, and being intentional with your time, you’re beginning to create something new and powerful. Each healthier choice you make should make you feel fantastic! Nobody can ever take away the good choices you make.

Now, the real fun begins when you add a string of good choices together. That’s when you see an entire lifestyle shift for the better!

And, do you know what? You’ll get on a roll with your good choices… and then suddenly, you’ll make a rotten choice! Or, several of them! What’s up with that?? You’re human. That’s what’s up! Put it behind you and make another string of healthy choices. What’s done is done. No use stressing over it… because that’s not good for you either.

As always, remember – it’s not about being “Perfect”. It’s about making healthier choices, more often.

When You Just Can’t Seem To Lose Weight

Gain Health in order to Lose Weight.

I often hear exclamations like these, uttered in frustration, during “weight loss” consultations…

“I’ve tried everything!”

“I eat healthy. I work out. I don’t know why I’m not losing weight!”

There’s a mental checklist I go through, helping to uncover where someone might be missing the mark with their efforts.

I start with the obvious. To me, that usually means starting with nutrition.

Years ago, I heard the saying: “A flat belly and great abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym!”

Great point!

I feel that in order to “lose weight” you need to gain health!

 

My checklist of “the obvious” factors that could be contributing to weight loss resistance:

Eating toxic &/or junk food. Regularly eating meals out of a box from the freezer section, or from the take-out bag, or from the fast food restaurant will not help your weight loss (or health gain) efforts.

Real food will take you where you need to be. High-quality, real food – meaning the least toxic sources you can sink your teeth into. (Also consider portion sizes, frequency of consumption, and timing of the consumption.)

Toxicity, inflammation & stress are the precursors for all chronic degenerative illness… including weight gain and difficulty shedding excess weight and fat. In response to toxicity, our body’s intelligent adaptive response is to harbor those excess toxins in fat cells. The more toxicity we’re exposed to, the larger our fat cells become and the more resistant our body becomes to release the fat.

Look to reduce, minimize, or eliminate sources of toxicity in the diet (and elsewhere).

The biggies:

  • sugar (and all things that quickly convert to sugar in the body)
  • artificial sweeteners/flavors/colors
  • trans fats, vegetable oils
  • high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup
  • (modern) soy
  • corn &  (conventional, modern) grains, gluten
  • conventional dairy
  • conventional meat & animal products
  • Don’t forget: diet foods, low-fat, and fat-free foods
  • drugs (“medications”) – I’ll get into that later

 

Starting Point Recommendations:

I will often recommend that someone experiencing weight loss resistance “Go Paleo”, at least initially.

The Paleo dietary approach is a fairly solid one for removing the majority of the inflammatory triggers in our diets. Cut out grains and almost all dairy – UNLESS it’s raw, cultured – for most, this means cut out all dairy! Yep. This includes your popular store-bought Greek yogurt. There’s nothing in that quality of yogurt that your body requires for optimal health and metabolic function.

Better yet, go “Paleo Plus” – an upgraded version of the Paleo approach that emphasizes quality of food choices. Choose grass-fed, pastured, free-range, and wild meats and eggs whenever possible. Choose organic produce. Add traditionally fermented vegetables and beverages. I will even add cultured dairy for its massive health benefits – a “Neo Paleo” approach like this, with raw, cultured dairy, is incredibly healing and beneficial.

Nope, Paleo is NOT right for everyone. But I’m working through an “obvious” checklist first, remember?

 

Next, are you burning fat? Or storing fat? While there are many reasons for storing excess fat, one of them to consider is your snacking habits. How often are you snacking, and on what? Empty, toxic calories? Or FUEL? Even if it’s quality fuel, oftentimes we just don’t need those snacks.

Depending on the individual, and the rest of their diet and lifestyle, I might recommend intermittent fasting… done properly! (More on that another day.)

Remember those extras throughout the day that most people don’t think of: beverages (pop, energy drinks, juice drinks, juice, sports drinks, flavored coffee, alcohol), dressings, condiments, sauces, dips, seasonings, cooking oils, bases & stocks for your cooking… even eating excess fruit.

 

Then, we get into Exercise.

The most common shortcomings I hear regarding exercise are:

  • Not exercising at all, or not very much
  • Doing “Chronic Cardio” – too much cardio, too often, for too long
  • Working out too much
  • Doing the same workout all the time
  • Not doing resistance training, or not providing enough challenge in the resistance training
  • Not doing burst/high-intensity exercise

 

I recently had a conversation like this with a young lady that said she was eating a ‘mostly’ Paleo diet, was walking for 30 minutes each day, and doing some workouts with weights (2-3 lbs.), and various video workouts each day… but just couldn’t “lose the excess weight” she had put on. (She is approximately 30 lbs. heavier than her ideal body weight.)

Some tweaks to the nutrition end: I recommended cutting out the toast with breakfast and the afternoon coffee. Also, we added healthy fats in the morning (in her cup of coffee, actually), and I recommended she do her workouts before eating anything. Most everything else in the diet was fine.

We added higher quality resistance to her workouts (increased the weights in order to provide her body with more of a challenge, thus increasing her Resting Metabolic Rate post-workout), shorter duration full-body fat-burning workouts – 3 times per week, plus short burst training sessions 2-3 times per week on the tail end of those shorter full-body resistance workouts. She could continue with the daily ‘easy’ walking… understanding that the walking was not a fat-burning workout, just good overall movement.

Her body said “thank you” and released 10 lbs. in just over 3 weeks.

The Next Layer…

Sometimes, it’s not that “easy”. She just needed some simple tweaks to wake up her metabolism. She wasn’t incredibly toxic or deficient, so her body responded quickly. That’s not always the case.

Other factors to consider that can be contributing to weight loss resistance:

  • Meds (prescribed or over-the-counter)
  • Stress / adrenal fatigue
  • Chronic pain
  • Sleep (or the lack thereof)
  • Elimination habits

  • Chronic (cellular) inflammation

  • A topic on its own is gluten. Gluten is a trigger for inflammation and breakdown in the body and has nasty properties uniquely its own (like the destruction of the protective “tight junctions” in our intestinal barrier system).

Even a Paleo diet doesn’t necessarily eliminate gluten, when you consider everything it’s in. e.g. supplements, meds, body care / skincare / cosmetics)

Plus, there are countless gluten cross-reactive foods – you can remove gluten, but still have the inflammatory immune response to the cross reactive foods. We see this a lot with people who tell us, “I went gluten-free and it didn’t help anything!” Then we get them tested properly and find out they’ve a list of cross-reactive foods they’ve been consuming regularly!

Also, going gluten-free isn’t enough. You MUST work to repair the gut, too…

  • Intestinal permeability/”Leaky Gut” – when there is breakdown in the intestinal barrier, this leads to chronic inflammation (a stressor), plus opens the door for autoimmune conditions and food sensitivity. When someone says they’re reacting to seemingly healthy foods, like eggs and nuts, it could be an issue of intestinal permeability rather than “allergy”. When the barrier has been compromised for long enough, you will respond with an inflammatory immune response to virtually everything you eat.

Note: you won’t always have classic “digestive” symptoms when there’s a gut issue, or gluten issue. Pay attention to how you truly feel after eating. Do you feel more energized, or more fatigued, or just the same? Look for subtle responses to your food consumption, too… not just the obvious ones we naturally think of. Unfortunately, in the case of food sensitivities, negative responses may not manifest themselves for hours… or even days. It’s challenging to pinpoint the triggers at times.

Speaking of gut, oftentimes re-populating the gut with superior healthy bacteria (probiotics) can be a massive boost to not only our health, but our weight loss efforts, too. I like adding cultured beverages  (rich with probiotics and beneficial enzymes) for this purpose.

The same can be true of nutritional complements in the diet like a high-quality greens/superfood product. When you fill in some of the nutritional gaps in the diet, the body tends to balance out, become more efficient (e.g. metabolism), and craves less toxic junk.

 

So, there’s a starting point… some things to consider if your body is not releasing its excess weight easily.

There’s often more to the story than “eat less, move more”.

 

This list is simply food for thought. Transitioning Away From Sugar & Carbs ~ Not Just A Weight Loss Issue!

Break Free From Carb & Sugar Addictions!

It’s a fairly regular occurrence in our practice and coaching that someone will ask for help with reducing their carb intake. Usually (but not always) it’s because they want to lose weight.

When the average person talks about carbs in this sense, they’re not talking about the valuable carbs (fresh fiber) found in fresh vegetables, for example. They’re typically talking about those gnarly “starchy carbs”.

Really, it’s not so much that they need help with decreasing their intake – since that would only be a matter of keeping your mouth closed and not eating it! – they want help with decreasing their intake and not feeling rotten or deprived in the process.

While there are many directions we could take with this little carb-reducing journey, these are 4 of the main points I typically make with patients from the start.

1) It’s important to know what you’re dealing with.

Many people still think I’m talking about adding a “spoonful” of sugar to their coffee when I ask about their sugar consumption… and they wonder what this has to do with their “carb” issue. I’ve had countless consultations where someone tells me they don’t use sugar, or they don’t add sugar to any foods, or they don’t even have sugar in the house… only to listen to them tell me 5 minutes later that they start their day with a bowl of cereal, or a bagel, or a piece of toast, or a flavored coffee on the way to work.

Then, it’s their sandwich or sub at lunch, and the pasta or pizza for dinner, the energy drinks and pop, the snack foods… it goes on and on.

It’s not just the Mary Poppins spoonful of sugar. It’s all the foods, beverages, and various ingredients that convert quickly (and in excess) to sugar. That’s one of the biggest issues with “carbs”.

I tell people to visually picture their starchy carbs as cup-fulls of sugar.

We have to consider the long & short-term health consequences of consuming all the bread, pasta, crackers, cookies, cereal, rice, etc.

  • One of the big problems with all this sugar intake is the massive stress effect on your blood sugar regulation, and your poor pancreas.
  • Sugar is considered “fuel” for cancer.
  • Additionally, these carb-based foods that the masses are consuming are rarely from pure, non-toxic sources. As a result, they cause additional issues with cellular inflammation and toxicity… which skews our hormonal communication system and metabolism, thus creating chronic challenges with getting “good” nutrition INTO the cell and “bad” waste OUT of the cell.

It’s quite the vicious cycle.

 

Inflammation, toxicity, and stress are the precursors to ALL chronic illness – cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hormonal resistance, autoimmune conditions, neurodegenerative conditions (MS, ALS, etc.), and so on.

On a more superficial note (compared to some of the aforementioned more serious long-term consequences of consuming carbs/sugars/grain-based foods) toxins are harbored in fat cells as an intelligent self-protective mechanism. The more toxic and inflammatory our diets, the larger our fat cells. The fat cells essentially trap the toxins to protect our more vital organs and systems. Decreasing the amount of toxicity helps the body more easily rid itself of excess body fat.

So, part one is to know that those food choices don’t come without consequence. They may be the popular, tasty, “status quo”… but look at the condition of our overall health in this culture that consumes excess carbs/ sugar! Consider the ever-increasing incidence of cancers, pancreatic issues, hormonal dysregulation, blood sugar imbalances & diabetes. Obviously, the status quo isn’t where we want to be.

Short term: these carbs & sugars cause us to gain weight & excessive body fat, maybe feel digestive distress, or lack of energy, or brain fog, or bloating, or chronic pain, etc…. but LONG term is far more dangerous.

 

2) At some point, you’ve just got to reclaim ownership of your body and wage a “strike” against these foods for a few days in order to break through the physical addictions. For most folks, that takes 4 or 5 days. Cut out all the culprits: bread, pasta, rice, cereals, alcohol, pop, energy drinks, fruit drinks, many condiments/dressings/dips/sauces, crackers, chips, pastries, baked goods, sweeteners, etc. and eat “clean” for a few days.

That’s enough to take care of the physical cravings. To take care of the mental and emotional attachments we have to these tasty toxins, you need to re-visit point #1… getting real with yourself and understanding the consequences of your choices.

I believe it’s always important to weigh the whole “pleasure vs. pain” deal. It’s a total mental thing once you get beyond the physiological cravings. So, you need to pay attention to what truly motivates you to act (or not act). Are you seeking pleasure by making healthy choices? Or avoiding pain by making those choices? And, vice versa: Are you seeking the short-term pleasure you associate with the more toxic choices? Or avoiding the perceived pain you associate with making healthier choices?

Once it becomes more painful to consume the foods that contribute to future illness, and more pleasant to consume foods that contribute to your future health, making healthier choices will become easier and more “second nature” for you. You might need to spend some time in “Head Space Boot Camp” ’til you get to where you want to be!

 

3) The strategy of ‘crowding out’ the tasty toxins with real, nourishing, whole foods is a powerful one. If, for example, you’re used to eating a bagel, or bowl of cereal, or piece of toast for breakfast, instead, you could opt for a few berries, and then some eggs and bacon/sausage or a protein smoothie, and maybe some green veggies. You don’t ‘need’ to eat the toast/bagel/cereal, at least not from a physical perspective. Your body doesn’t need more food.

I’ve used the phrase “Fuel up with health FIRST” for years with our kids. Give your body the healthier options first… then, as the theory goes, you may end up not wanting the less-than-healthy choice after… or at least not as much of it. If we ever opt for pizza (gluten-free or not), for example, we know we’re eating full salads &/or veggies first… then a little pizza. Crowd out the “bad”.

 

4) Substitution is a similar strategy and equally as powerful.

If you normally eat a sandwich, substitute with lettuce wraps, or the “insides” of the sandwich on top of a salad, or the “insides” on their own. Same thing with dinner – we do a lot of “wrap” ingredients on top of a salad, or lettuce wraps, or just meat with lots of veggies. Never underestimate the power of a bacon wrap or a bacon bowl!

If we feel like having pasta, we can substitute with Paleo-like versions made from squash or cauliflower, for example. Or you can substitute traditional flour-based foods with coconut or almond flour. Substitute pop, juice, and alcohol for cultured & fermented beverages like Kombucha, Suero or Amasai that actually serve beneficial and nourishing roles.

Instead of common snack foods, like chips and crackers, have healthy go-to foods readily available for those times when the munchies strike: jerky, hard-boiled eggs, avocados/guacamole, chicken strips, veggies, any type of fermented foods, some raw nuts, protein smoothies… Just don’t become a chronic snacker, though. This leads us to become fat storers vs. fat burners.

Paleo and Paleo-like approaches are definitely the way to go if you’re looking to decrease (or eliminate) toxic, starchy carb consumption while simultaneously fueling your body with healthy, nourishing foods. With some lifestyle changes, it’s all about “baby steps”. But in the case of sugar and carb addictions, I’d actually recommend going cold turkey for a few days. This is the only way to break the physical addiction. Cheating, even a little, takes you back to ground zero! Sugar consumption leads to more cravings for sugar!

Remember, it’s not about being perfect. While it would be ideal to permanently rid ourselves of sugar and toxic carbs, if you can “strike” from the carbs/sugar/toxicity, and then go back to those foods LESS frequently, you’re already better off! The more you can avoid/substitute, the better.

It’s a daily ‘battle’ for many of us, for sure.

Try This Fat Burning Workout!

The Turbulence Training Physique

Time to get back into shape?

If you’re new to exercise, or are just beginning on a healthy lifestyle plan, I highly recommend daily walking as your first form of exercise. It’s good for your overall health, it’s a great stress-management tool, and you can do it almost anywhere… for the rest of your life. It’s an important foundational movement pattern to adopt.

However, if you’re ready to step up your fat loss exercise plan, it’s hard to beat the Turbulence Training program by my Canadian brother, Craig Ballantyne.

I’ve shared his work with readers here before. Craig is the real-deal and he knows his stuff when it comes to exercise, fitness, fat loss, nutrition, and how to maximize the results of your efforts.

Turbulence Training 2.0 is the workout program I’ve chosen to start my New Year with. (I like to change up my approaches a few times throughout the year to keep things fresh.)

The next 3 months’-worth of workouts will revolve around Turbulence Training… with a little add-on here and there. The workouts are 30 minutes, performed three times per week.

Here’s and example of a recent workout from the program Turbulence Training 2.0. I did this two days ago and I’m still feeling it in my legs! Love that!

(If you’re not familiar with some of the exercises listed below, the easiest thing to do for now is to look them up on YouTube.)

This workout is no joke – please don’t do it if you’re a beginner! (Don’t worry, though – Craig has 6 weeks of Beginner Workouts in his Turbulence Training system, complete with follow-along videos.)

Here’s the workout that had me at “hello”!

 

Warm-up Circuit:

Go through 2 times with no rest between exercises.
– Rest 20 seconds between circuits.

o    Prisoner Squat – 20 seconds
o    Pushup or Kneeling Pushup – 20 seconds
o    Stability Ball Leg Curl – 20 seconds
o    Band Pull – 20 seconds

 

Metabolic Resistance Training Circuit #1

1A) Dumbbell (DB) Goblet Step-Up – 30 seconds per side
– 15 seconds rest/transition.

1B) T-Pushup (alternating sides) – 30 seconds
– 15 seconds rest/transition.

1C) KB (Kettlebell) or DB Swing – 30 seconds
– Rest 30 seconds

Repeat 1 more time for a total of 2 circuits.

 

Metabolic Resistance Training Circuit #2

2A) 1-Arm DB Squat & Press – 40 seconds per side
– 20 seconds rest/transition.

2B) DB Renegade Row (alternating) – 40 seconds
– 20 seconds rest/transition.

5 Exercises NOT To Do

The Home Workout Revolution - Craig Ballantyne

 

I’ve seen the benefits of doing bodyweight-only workouts over the years, both personally as well as in our practice.

In fact, I spent the better part of the last day and a half making funny noises every time I sat down , got up, or went up and down stairs… all because of the bodyweight workout I did the day before! They can definitely be effective, that’s for sure.

Personally, I think one of the reasons bodyweight exercises can be so effective is that, without added resistance, I tend to really push the limits of a full range of motion on each exercise. Yeah. You definitely feel the effects of challenging yourself like that in the next day or two!

My point? Bodyweight exercises shouldn’t be snubbed just because you’re used to lifting heavy weights, swinging kettlebells, or throwing massive tires around. They definitely have their place in the workout regime as well.

I’ve turned to them to shake things up and add variety to my own exercise routine, and I’ve confidently recommended them to countless practice members and coaching clients who are stepping outside their comfort zone of “chronic cardio” in an effort to finally get in shape or lose weight.

I recently talked about exercise authority, Craig Ballantyne, here. Craig is a huge proponent of bodyweight workouts, and one of the people that convinced me, years back, that bodyweight workouts could be so effective.

5 Bodyweight Exercises NOT To Do (and 3 exercises you might be doing wrong)

By Craig Ballantyne, CTTIf you have a sore shoulder, bad back, achy knees, or tight Achilles tendon, then you must AVOID the 5 bodyweight exercises listed below.#1 – Triceps dips with your hands behind you on a bench – These are terrible for your shoulder joint and rotator cuff muscles.

#2 – Jumping exercises on concrete OR if you are overweight – These will kill your knees.

#3 – Sit-ups & crunches & V-sits – These will cause you back problems, as Dr. Stuart McGill has written about in the New York Times.

#4 – Pushups with your elbows flared out wide – This “bodybuilder” version of pushups will cause you great grief in your shoulder joint and rotator cuff, just like the classic barbell bench press.

#5 – High repetition box jumps where you jump back off the box with each rep – Your Achilles will snap one of these days. Bad news bears right there! And I’m sorry, but you’re not as wealthy as Kobe Bryant, so I doubt you’ll be able to fly off to Germany for the world’s best medical treatment to help you recover.

Of course, if you’ve been reading articles of mine for more than a few months, you probably already knew not to do those moves. But you might still be making the following mistakes on 3 otherwise awesome bodyweight exercises.

Please do NOT do…

1) Mountain Climbers with a rounded low-back

This will hurt your back just as quickly as sit-ups or crunches. You must keep your body in a straight line with your abs braced to get the best ab workout and fitness boost from this exercise. You’ll also get a much more INTENSE abdominal workout when you SLOW the reps down, particularly when you do the X-Body Mountain Climber version. Stay tight and strict and you’ll get the most results from this simple exercise.

2) Prisoner Squats with “lazy” hands

When you do prisoner squats, you need to keep your fingers interlaced behind your head, your elbows back, and your shoulder blades squeezed together. That is how you get MORE results from this move. It allows you to work your upper back without equipment. Don’t be lazy like most people that just touch their finger tips to the side of their head. That’s lame.

3) Ugly Lunges

This is the most over-prescribed exercise in bodyweight history, and far too many people are doing lunges that have no business doing this exercise at all. It’s no laughing matter when I see people doing ugly lunges in the gym.

Listen, it’s okay if you don’t have the proper balance to do lunges. You can switch to a safer exercise such as Reverse Lunges, Split Squats, Step-ups, or 1-Leg Lying Hip Extensions.

We want you to train hard, but safe. No wobbling or falling over! And don’t even think about adding resistance to your lunges if you can’t do the basic bodyweight version correctly.

4-Minute Workout Better Than Cardio?

Could a 4-minute workout really be better than cardio?

Yes, according to many exercise authorities.

Is Long Distance Running A Good Form Of Cardio Exercise?

The Truth About Cardio Training

Longer distance running never really came naturally to me.

In high school, I was a sprinter. I liked that.

Then, the cross-country coach wanted me to join his ranks after track season. I did that for a couple years. It was fine, but I didn’t love it as much as sprinting.

My college roomie was (and still is) a fabulous long-distance runner. She introduced me to the next level of “fun” with longer distances. When I ran with her, we chatted and cracked up and generally had fun!

A few years later at a personal development camp I attended, we had to run several miles every morning, well before the sun even thought about shedding light on the day.

Something clicked then. Running became more mental… more of a ritual.

What really took me to the next level with running was dealing with my mom’s illness in the months leading up to her death. Running was my “me” time. I dealt with my fears, my sadness, my stress, my anger at “the system”… just by the repetitive nature of a long run.

In the years since then, the best part of a longer run for me is the emotional stress release.  Running is like an escape… time to get away.

Last ‘season’, I did fewer longer distance runs than I had in previous years. I found that anything much beyond 6 or 7 miles really started bothering a knee injury I had suffered a few months prior. So, I didn’t push beyond that too much.

This season, I had some thinking to do.

In the early spring, I was presented with the very tempting opportunity to join a group of like-minded individuals to train for a marathon this fall… all with a mission-minded purpose.

I actually signed up to ‘reserve’ my spot.

Then, I started planning out my training schedule based on a few well-known marathon training gurus’ advice.

The first thing that struck me was “How will I ever create the TIME to do this??” It seemed very selfish to spend that many hours each week, for so many months, training for this… and home school… and run a practice… and a few other businesses… and still try to be a good mom, wife, and take care of our home!

Then I started thinking about my joints… and the injuries that still hadn’t fully healed.

Then I started thinking about how out-of-balance my exercise and movement routine was beginning to look on paper as I was planning my training schedule.

Then I started thinking about the ever-increasing amounts of research coming out, demonstrating how long-distance cardio is inferior to shorter, more varied training sessions. In fact, it’s no secret that long duration, steady-state, low-to-moderate intensity cardio is detrimental to our health. Yikes.

I was really having a hard time justifying why on earth I’d choose to start this type of training… knowing that it goes against what I (academically and intuitively) know is best for my body.

So, I didn’t.

Instead, I spent the last few months mixing things up.

I started walking daily. Once, sometimes twice, per week, I’d add a shorter run of two or three miles. Once or twice a week, I’d do “burst” training by adding hill sprints or sprinting intervals. Two or three times each week I did resistance training at home, and did FitnessFlow Yoga regularly. I’d hit the trails for bike rides every so often, too. And, my favorite activity for the past several months has been stand-up paddling.  It’s fun, intense and challenging at times, while peaceful and relaxing when I want it to be.

In hind sight, I’m very happy that I didn’t venture down the marathon training path. It’s just not the right path for me… or my body… or my schedule… or my brain that gets way too bored too easily!

I’m not saying I’ll never do longer distances again. Who knows? For now, my body is happier – and more fit – with the shorter bursts of activity added to the foundation of daily movement.

I like that. MORE fit, with less time spent working out.

Current science has been perfectly clear. Shorter, more focused exercise sessions will actually get you better results when it comes to fat loss and weight loss.

But, hey… sometimes, even if you’ve seen it a hundred times, that hundred and first time can be when something finally clicks! You know the saying, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears!”

Recently, I was reviewing another fat loss / weight loss program. It’s called The Fat Loss Solution by Ryan Faehnle.

Ryan’s no slouch in the world of fitness and exercise. His certifications are CSCS, FMS, PICP, BioSignature & PIMST Strength & Conditioning Coach Miami University, 2005 – 2011. Not too shabby.

Ryan’s program seems different… a cut above the rest in a few ways. (I kept reading ’til the end!) So, I thought I’d share a bit about it with you, in case you’re in need of a focused program to get down to the nitty gritty of fat loss. Maybe this will be that 101st time for you… and something clicks! :)

Ryan has been referred to as one of the top “under-the-radar” fat loss consultants in the world. Top personal trainers and coaches from around the world fly Ryan in to help them get better results for their clients. Evidently, the man can work miracles!

I’d recommend you read the full review of Ryan’s program here to see how thorough and well-done it is (and whether or not it seems like a good fit for you), but I’ll briefly share what the 5 basic keys of his program are:

1) There’s a major focus on creating lean, sleek muscle mass through specific exercise protocols that he walks you through. When we can balance our muscle-to-fat ratio in healthy way, our muscle metabolism works for us 24/7 to burn excess fat. Yes, “fat falls off”, so to speak!

2) Ryan’s program aims to get your fat-burning hormones to work for you once again. When your hormones are out of whack (scientific term!), you can work out ’til you’re blue in the face, or eat a great diet, but your body just won’t drop the excess fat. The body’s smart that way. Ryan’s program talks about combining a specific way of eating with a specific way of exercising, all to get your hormones back into balance.

3) Seriously limiting calories and depriving yourself can backfire and cause you to store even more fat! Ryan describes how to combine the right types of food, at the right time, with the right intensity of exercise, and the proper supplements, to kick your fat burning metabolism into gear.

4) For the most part, “spot reduction” of fat doesn’t work. Those “trouble spots” are almost always a result of hormonal imbalances. Ryan discusses exactly which hormones tend to cause some of the most common trouble spots, like “love handles” and “saddlebags”… and he teaches you how to correct that through specific strategies with diet, exercise, and supplementation.

5) Ryan’s step-by-step exercise program teaches you how to improve your personal performance from one session to the next. This, he says, is the key difference between folks who work out (relatively) the same year after year… and look the same year after year, versus those who look better and better over time. No matter your age or level of experience, Ryan says his work outs will make a clear and noticeable improvement in your physique.

 

So, there you have it… a very basic overview of Ryan’s all-inclusive fat loss system.

I like that this will work for the vast majority of who commit to it and actually do what Ryan says to do. He makes it perfectly clear in this step-by-step program.

It’s a great buy for the money, considering everything you get, and everything you will learn. It’s an 8-component system, plus Ryan throws in some neat freebie bonuses as well.

It’s hard to go wrong here.

Yes, I know this program may not be for everyone. Some folks have serious hormonal resistance that needs more personalized help than a program like this can offer. Others have food sensitivity issues that need to be addressed before their health will ever improve, or they need to repair a gut permeability issue, or a thyroid imbalance, or an autoimmune condition, or they need to do a complete cellular detoxification protocol first, and so on. 10 Simple Strategies To Prevent “Family Obesity”

It’s no secret that our culture has a problem with excess body weight, body fat, weight gain, and obesity. We’ve gotten bigger, as a whole, each year for nearly 30 years (since the CDC began tracking obesity in the U.S.). Both adults and children are living out this trend. Families are gaining weight together… and losing their health.

While there are countless contributing factors to weight gain, the solutions lie in consistently making healthier lifestyle choices for the long run. Our toxic lifestyles are what’s gotten us in trouble on many levels, increased body weight and body fat being one. The more toxic we are, the fatter we become. Our body’s protective mechanism against toxicity is to harbor it in fat cells. More toxicity means more fat!

There’s no quick fix for a family that needs to get back on track. Slow and steady is what will win this war.

Getting our health back, losing the excess weight, and maintaining a healthier lifestyle is a family affair. Few things could be more important than a family committing to getting healthy together.

It doesn’t have to be hard. It’s not about being perfect, or rigid, or never indulging in your favorite “tasty toxins” again! It’s about the big picture. As a family, we can strive to make our overall lifestyle a healthier one.  We can make choices that result in healthier function, and avoid choices that subtract from our health.

Here are 10 simple strategies and healthy habits that can help families shed their excess weight and begin to re-gain their health:

1. Have ‘official’ meals together. This isn’t a new idea, obviously! When we sit down together as a family to share a meal, and conversation, it’s good for us on many levels. In addition to the social and emotional benefits of eating as a family, we can control some of the factors that tend to contribute to weight gain. We can provide healthy foods, cook with healthy ingredients, and control portion sizes.

We can also strive to make our meals about our time together, rather than on inhaling food while watching T.V., and getting the meal over with! When we slow down and chew our food, not only does our family dynamic tend to improve, but our body’s metabolism does, as well. I know you’ve got things to do… but give this a whirl once in awhile. Relax, light a candle, listen to some nice background music, share, and enjoy each other… there will be plenty of other opportunities for you to rush and go crazy! Try to add more “nice” meal times to your schedule.

2. Shift the focus of meals from grain-based and starchy carbohydrate foods to more protein and plant-based foods. Think how often a grain-based food is the center of attention in a meal: cereal, pastries, bread/toast, sandwiches, pizza, pasta, mac & cheese, breaded foods, potatoes, etc.

These foods cause some serious damage in addition to causing us to pack on extra weight and fat – inflammation and toxicity are two of the biggest problems these foods can cause. Make the transition away from this significant contributor to obesity by adding more “clean” protein, healthy fats, and plant-based foods, like vegetables and salads to your meals.

3. Control snacking throughout the day. While “grazing” used to be recommended as a way to stay trim, that’s not really recommended for the average person anymore. It can tend to turn us into “sugar burners” vs. “fat burners”. I’m not saying that we can’t snack! Just be mindful of what your family is snacking on.

Just like at meal time, shift away from foods that are predominantly grains and sugar-based, or worse yet, fake snack ‘foods’ & beverages that are loaded with artificial toxic ingredients. Snack on real food that provides your body fuel – protein, healthy fats, plants.

Also, spread out the time between snacks and meals – we should be able to last a couple hours or more without ‘needing’ something to eat. Our bodies’ fat burning hormones do a better job, by the way, when we allow ourselves to get a little hungry. Yes, I know there are people out there who ‘need’ to snack more frequently for a variety of reasons. I’m just talking about the average bear, with the average activity level, and the average mindset about food here! I doubt that anyone reading this is in danger of starving anytime soon!

4. Again, nothing new here… just a reminder. It’s significantly easier to eat healthy when healthy foods are readily available. Plan for it. Even if you’re not into completely planning out your family’s meals to a T, at least plan on having ample veggies, fruit, and healthier snacks, like raw nuts, on hand. Better yet, prepare it for easy snacking… no excuses when hunger strikes. They can reach for carrot sticks, broccoli florets, and celery sticks rather than a bag of chips.

Be careful of the “dippers” in the family! Veggies don’t need to be drowned in toxic dips, dressings, or sauces in order to be consumed! In fact, this will sabotage your family’s weight loss efforts.

I’d keep an eye on the amount of fruit being consumed, too. I don’t have a ‘free-for-all’ policy with fruit since it does contain a lot of sugar. Again, just be mindful. Clearly though, eating fruit is certainly better than eating junk food.

5. On the flip side, make it more challenging to access toxic junk food that’s contributing to weight gain and loss of health. It’s a whole lot harder to mindlessly munch on junk food when it’s not in your house in the first place. Right? Why bring it in then? That’s setting your family up to fail. At the very least, minimize the amount of toxic junk food that you keep in your home… or have access to.

6. Consider the overall picture of food going into your family in any given day (or few days). You might want to consider implementing something like a “no back-to-back toxicity” policy. For example, in our family, if the kids end up having something grain-based or high in sugar at breakfast time (like cereal or toast), then I know they’re not going to have a (traditional) sandwich at lunch. So, we might do lettuce wraps instead, for example. I’ll make sure their next snacks and meals aren’t focused on grains.

If you know you’re having pizza for dinner, then make sure lunch isn’t a bowl of pasta! And, remember that adding healthy foods to the less-than-healthy meal makes that overall meal healthier. So, add a nice salad to that pizza and the overall effect is healthier. Simple. Not perfect, but much better.

You can do the same type of thing with snacks. Maybe they do consume something that’s less-than-healthy. So be it. Clean up the next snack or meal… no back-to-back toxicity.

7. If your family is into “dessert” on a regular basis, make the effort to change that. Not much good comes from dessert… other than the taste, of course! You’ve got many options to get healthier here: offer smaller servings and no ‘seconds'; don’t have dessert every single night; or, offer something healthier, like fruit instead. Fruit IS “God’s candy”, after all!

You can also opt for doing something completely different to shake up your family’s routine. If you’re used to eating your dinner and then moving right into dessert time, change it up. After dinner, clear the dishes, get your shoes on and get outta’ the house together! Although I’m sure some of you would argue with me on this, it’s challenging to eat that piece of cake while you’re clipping along in a brisk walk!

Seriously though, a change of scenery, a change of routine, might be just what your family needs to break that unhealthy habit… and create a new, healthier one instead.

8. Encourage your family to drink more water rather than pop, juice, energy & sports drinks, coffee, etc. The majority of these other beverages are loaded with toxic ingredients that directly contribute to weight gain and health loss. Our bodies need water! You can get each family member their own non-toxic reusable water bottle to sip from throughout the day, if that helps.

 

9. Move together. A very healthy habit to commit to as a family is to take a walk together after dinner. Again, it’s good for your body – digestion, metabolism, etc. – but it’s obviously good on a bigger level, too. It’s a great time to connect and communicate as a family.

Besides after dinner strolls, commit to doing something active together on a regular basis. Maybe it’s once a week, or every couple weeks… but try to get the entire family together for something active, like a nice long bike ride, or hiking, or whatever floats your family’s boat.

10. Along the same line, limit screen time and opt for more time spent outdoors. We tend to become mindless when plopped in front of the boob tube, or any other type of screen! Mindless and getting healthy don’t go very well together!

Oh, relax! Obviously I’m not saying “you should never, ever watch television or use your laptop or smart phone”. Silly. Just commit to more outdoor time… “unplugged”, if you will. Yes, moms and dads, I’m talking to you, too. :)

In nice, warm weather, like this time of year, it’s easy to find things to do together outside. Go swimming, take a stroll, go for a swim, play catch, jump on a trampoline, or play various “yard games”. You can also build something together, work on a project together, tend to a garden together, get social with the neighbors together… just get outside and get more active.
