The Thyroid Sessions ~ A Free Online Event You Don’t Want To Miss!

The Thyroid Sessions

Your thyroid runs the show.

Most importantly, it controls your metabolism. Your thyroid function basically determines if your body’s (figurative) foot is on the gas pedal or on the brake.

When your thyroid isn’t functioning up to par it can leave you feeling exhausted, overweight, depressed, constipated, brain foggy, and much, much more.

It truly is incredible how far-reaching the effects of thyroid imbalance really are.

In fact, your thyroid could actually be THE cause of your most significant health challenges.

Knowing how profound the effects of thyroid imbalance are, that’s why I also find it incredible how often it’s misdiagnosed or mismanaged… or missed all together!

Over 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease… an estimated 200 million worldwide… and this number is on the rise with each passing year. Yet, an even bigger problem is that 60% are completely unaware they even have a thyroid problem – let alone how to heal it and restore healthy function!

I can’t tell you how often I listen to someone’s list of symptoms, ask them if they’ve had their thyroid “properly tested”, and they tell me…

“The tests show that it’s NORMAL!!!”

As far as they’re concerned, it’s a done deal.

What if you’re not getting the right test in the first place. Then what?

Millions of people are suffering—trying all kinds of diets, pills, and treatments to try to lose weight, boost their energy, stop their hair loss, and clear their brain fog. Unfortunately, they will all fail unless they:

#1 Have it properly diagnosed using ACCURATE testing, and

#2 Learn how to heal the underlying thyroid issues and address the full picture of factors that effect thyroid function.

It’s much bigger than treating a lab test result.

Sadly, Western medicine has fallen behind when it comes to the latest research on the causes and treatments — both natural and synthetic — for thyroid problems. There are many theories, but not many mainstream ‘solutions’.

Tweaking your meds in response to the latest lab test result for the rest of your life isn’t much of a solution.

This is why I was very happy to see that my colleague Sean Croxton of Underground Wellness has brought together a couple dozen of the world’s most knowledgeable experts to teach you EVERYTHING your doctor didn’t tell you about thyroid disorders.

It’s called: The Thyroid Sessions

It’s happening from Sunday May 4th – 11th.

Registration is FREE!! Just click here to reserve your spot.

(This is another FREE online event that Sean has coordinated – watch from home, watch in your p.j.’s, watch with your dog on your lap… just watch!)

Just a few of the experts who will be interviewed:

Chris Kresser reveals the truly surprising truth about “normal ranges”.

Dr. Dan Kalish walks you through a simple, inexpensive way to test your thyroid at home.

Dr. Kelly Austin shows you how to avoid fillers like gluten and lactose in thyroid meds.

Dr. Alan Christianson teaches you how to shrink thyroid nodules…naturally.

Christa Orecchio discusses real food and lifestyle strategies for hyperthyroid and Graves’ disease.

Dr. Sara Gottfried shows you how to lose weight when your thyroid is off.

Click here to view the entire lineup!

Shortly after you reserve your spot for this free online event, Sean will send you a  FREE one-hour interview with “Gluten Master”  Dr. Tom O’Bryan about the impact of gluten consumption on Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. If you register early, you’ll receive more thyroid-related goodies, too!

Please share this Thyroid Sessions event with your friends and family by forwarding this post or sharing it via social media. You just might change someone’s life. :)

12 Easy Ways To Naturally Support Digestion

Digestive Issues

Gas, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, reflux, constipation… oy. It’s not fun at all when your digestive system isn’t cooperating with you.

While this is an enormous topic, and can have very serious and chronic causes at the root of your symptoms, there are some simple things you can do in order to start helping your digestion right away.

Note: the more chronic your symptoms, the more I urge you to work with an experienced practitioner who can help you properly identify the true cause of your symptoms, and help you with an effective recovery protocol. One of the most important factors to determine early on in your investigation is whether or not you have intestinal permeability. If so, most other treatment efforts will fall short until this is properly addressed.

12 Easy Ways to Naturally Support Digestion

1) Eat Real Food & Simplify

The most basic, foundational step you can make in order to address digestive issues is to eat REAL food! Keep your diet simple ~ choose “clean” (non-toxic) meats and animal sources of protein, veggies, some fruit, healthy fats, and pure beverages. Cut out packaged, processed foods that are loaded with additives, preservatives, excitotoxins, sugar derivatives, GMOs, and various toxic & inflammatory ingredients that only subtract from your health.

2) Add Traditionally Cultured & Fermented Foods

Yes, these foods are becoming the poster child for health food in the mainstream nutrition arena! In addition to providing an abundance of beneficial bacteria, live enzymes, and a plethora of nutrients to boost our overall health, fermented foods directly aid in digestion. The fermentation process itself makes the beneficial nutrients more ‘bioavailable’ and therefore easier for your digestive system to benefit from. Add cultured veggies and beverages to your diet on a regular basis and see how quickly you notice improvements. (If your digestive issues are currently inflamed, try small amounts of sauerkraut juice first, before eating.)

3) Add Bone Broth

Here’s another miracle food to incorporate, whether you have digestive issues or not!

Traditionally prepared bone broth is a very easy on our digestive systems, yet is a nutritional powerhouse, helping us assimilate vitamins and minerals even better. It’s easy to include bone broth in on a daily basis by cooking meals with it, making soups or stews, sipping it by the cupful, or reducing the broth for a sauce or gravy. Bone broth is easy to make, with ample recipes available online… but if you don’t have time, there are online sources for high quality bone broth, too. (I like U.S. Wellness Meats.)

4) Eliminate Gluten

To be perfectly frank, if you have chronic digestive issues, I’d rather you consider eliminating grains all together… at least for awhile, until you’re fully recovered. However, gluten is an important starting point. Gluten is a menace. Specific proteins found in gluten have been shown to breakdown the “tight junctions” in our intestinal barrier, thus allowing molecules that are too large to pass through this barrier. This creates an ongoing immune attack and sets the stage for an autoimmune condition. Due to the nefarious nature of gluten, it’s not enough to just “go gluten-free” – you MUST simultaneously work to repair the gut.

If you’re not ready to give up the rest of your grains yet, you can ‘upgrade’ your grain consumption by: choosing organic grains, soaking them, choosing sprouted whole grains, choosing ancient grains, and decreasing your consumption.

5) Reduce Common Inflammatory Foods

There are certain trigger foods that are commonly considered to be problematic when it comes to digestive health. Topping the list are: gluten, conventional dairy containing A1 beta casein, modern soy, sugar, conventional eggs, many nuts, peanuts (a legume), corn, and nightshade vegetables. It’s wise to remove these from the diet for at least 21-days, see how your body responds, and then IF you plan to re-introduce them, do so one at a time over the course of several weeks again. I would recommend NOT re-introducing gluten, however… and upgrade to cultured dairy with A2 beta casein (Beyond Organic is an excellent source for this), pastured eggs, limited sugar from natural sources, and very limited amounts of the other trigger foods…. once again, IF you choose to consume them at all.

6) Incorporate Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) or Terrain

Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar can also help optimize your digestive juices. Simply add a teaspoon to a glass of water and drink 20-30 minutes before meals. Be sure you are using real, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar, like Bragg’s brand, and not apple flavored white vinegar.

Another excellent option for its traditional gut restorative properties is Terrain liquid herbals from Beyond Organic.

Does adding something acidic, like vinegar, seem counter-intuitive when it comes to gut health? Actually, most of us have an issue with too little stomach acid as we age (and encounter life stressors), rather than too much stomach acid. This results in food that is not completely broken down by the stomach getting passed into the small intestine before it should… and interfering with further breakdown and nutrient absorption. Shutting off those “stomach pumps” with one of many medications on the market is counter-productive to solving the real problem.

7) Avoid Stress Eating (or “on-the-go” eating)

Eating while under stress or when we are in a rush or on-the-go can interfere with our natural digestive process. This is about neurology. When we’re stressed or in a hurry, or focusing on something potentially ‘dangerous’ (like driving) we’re sympathetic dominant.  When we’re relaxed, we’re in parasympathetic mode. Digestion is a parasympathetic nervous system process. Trying to outsmart our nervous system rarely works in our favor! Slow down, relax, chew your food well… and your digestion will naturally improve.

8 ) Add (and maintain your own) Digestive enzymes

Adding digestive enzymes to your post-meal routine can be a simple remedy to help with digestive distress. Good quality sources are readily available at any health food store. Also keep in mind some simple things you can do to optimize your body’s own production and use of digestive enzymes: don’t waste your enzymes on useless things like gum or mints. Save those precious enzymes for real food! Also, don’t guzzle gallons of liquids with your meals. Again, this dilutes the effects of your body’s natural digestive enzymes and can be a contributor to chronic digestive issues.

9) Cleanse/detox regularly

This is a simple premise. Since we’re NOT perfect… since we DO tend to get off track… since we ARE exposed to a dizzying array of toxic and inflammatory foods, it just makes sense to give our bodies and digestive systems a break on a regular basis. I’m a big supporter of regular cleansing and detoxifying. There are countless options to choose from here, from simple 3-day cleanses, to much longer and more comprehensive ones.

You might want to consider doing the 21-day guided health recovery program described here.

10) Use “Swedish Bitters”

Bitters are a traditional digestive tonic using extracts of bitter herbs and spices so often lacking in our modern diet. Bitters stimulate the digestive system to produce digestive enzymes, secrete bile, and help balance the hydrochloric acid (HCl) in our stomachs, as discussed earlier. Look for quality sources that make their bitters with non-GMO organic ingredients, gluten-free alcohol, and contain no artificial flavors or corn syrup, like may commercial brands do.

11) Move regularly

Motion is life. Movement stimulates proprioceptive pathways to the brain that create a more desirable output from the brain… and output that drives us toward optimal function and feeling “good”. Ultimately, regular movement results in a better brain and better brain function. Movement also physically stimulates our digestive systems. We know, for example, when our elimination processes are backed up, that going for a walk can help. This is a simple premise: movement stimulates optimal function. Make sure you’re moving regularly – your brain and every part of your body thrive on it!

12) Get Regular Chiropractic Adjustments

“What does my back have to do with my digestion?!” Chiropractic isn’t about your back, per say. It’s about your neurological function. It just so happens that your spine plays an enormous role in your neurological function, due to the simple fact that it contains a very large part of your central nervous system! When the spine isn’t moving naturally, or interferes with optimal neurological function in any way, then your digestion (and every other physical, mental, and emotional function in your body) can be negatively impacted. Having your spine checked regularly, and adjusted when necessary, can only help your overall function. It’s an intelligent addition to a healthy lifestyle.

So, these are some relatively simple starting points and additions you can make to your routine in order to begin aiding your digestive process. Sometimes, this is all it takes. Other times, you may need to do more serious work to fully recover – identify whether or not you have gut permeability (“leaky gut”), whether or not you have true food sensitivities, whether or not you need to add HCl, whether or not you have a pathogen wreaking havoc on your gut health, etc. Much to think about and explore!

Let me know if I can help.

Nutrition Upgrades With The Highest Return On Investment

The Truth About Nutrition

We know that a “healthy lifestyle” is comprised of several factors: nutrition, exercise, mental & emotional balance, stress management, proper sleep, and so on. Creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes ongoing effort and intention in the choice-making department.

In order to consistently move in the desirable direction along the ‘sliding scale of health’, toward optimal health and function, as opposed to loss of health, dysfunction, and dis-ease, we need to be intentional with our lifestyle choices.

When we add more “pure & sufficient” choices in the areas of diet, exercise, stress management, etc…. and reduce or eliminate “toxic & deficient” choices in these areas, we create the shift required for optimal health to be expressed.

This is what we’ve talked about in our practice and coaching programs for years. The lifestyle choices we make on a consistent basis will shape our overall health and level of function.

While ALL components of our lifestyle matter, nutrition plays a critically important and foundational role in shaping our health, how we feel, how we look, and how our bodies will respond to the daily stressors and toxicity thrown our way.

The ‘diet’ we encourage our practice members to consume is a low-toxicity, anti-inflammatory, low-sugar, balanced, REAL foods diet. This “healthy lifestyle diet” simply focuses on the least toxic sources of protein, fats, and plant-based foods, while staying properly hydrated with pure & beneficial beverages.

We avoid conventional grains and dairy, as well as man-made factory foods.

Ideally, we’re doing some type of cleansing and cellular detoxification on a ‘regular’ basis – whatever that means to you! It could be short cleanses every month, or more comprehensive detoxification seasonally. It’s nice to start our nutrition upgrades with a clean slate, so to speak.

These are the most important diet & nutrition upgrades we recommend:

  • Change to healthy fats and remove bad fats (no man-made synthetic fats, trans fats, or vegetable oils)
  • Upgrade your meat & animal food sources (grass-fed, pastured, free-range, drug-free, wild, cultured, lacto-fermented)
  • Decrease/eliminate refined grains and sugar
  • Eliminate gluten
  • Eat plenty of vegetables, some fruit, and add traditionally cultured & fermented foods
  • Add only the core nutritional supplements/complements that your body truly needs (is currently deficient in). e.g. most of us truly need to add beneficial bacteria in the form of superior quality probiotics, and most of us could use help with ongoing detox and adaptation to stress.
  • In addition to pure water, hydrate with beneficial & functional fluids (e.g. coconut water, fermented beverages, etc.)

When you follow these dietary recommendations, then we KNOW this is what’s happening:

  • There is a reduction of inflammation throughout your entire body
  • Your body is continuing the process of detoxification because this type of diet heals the cell membrane, where true detoxification must occur
  • Dysregulated hormone function is returning to more regulated hormonal function as the cell membrane continues to heal

The return on your nutrition investment is HUGE!

Inflammation, Toxicity, and Dysregulation of Hormonal Function are the 3 main players that set the stage for serious illness!

This means that your risk for EVERY serious, chronic, degenerative “disease of lifestyle” is significantly reduced the longer you follow this dietary approach!

“Let food be thy medicine.”

As a bonus, it’s also easier for your body to maintain an optimal body composition (weight, body fat percentage, lean muscle mass) with this type of diet and cleansing.

Instead of counting calories and food “points”, count your blessings… and choose better food!

To Paleo or Not To Paleo? Let the Experts Help You Decide!

Paleo Con is Here!

I recently talked about this here… how I’m not 100% Paleo. More accurately, I’m not Paleo 100% of the time.

I go in phases. I will go for months without having any grains or dairy. But, then there are times when I choose to add some cultured dairy on a cleanse, or just as a functional beverage, for example.

However, in our practice and distance care programs, we recommend that many people with autoimmune conditions, leaky gut, and food sensitivities begin their healing process by “going Paleo”, at least for a period of time.

The Paleo diet does a nice job of removing the vast majority of inflammatory trigger foods, so it’s an easy recommendation to make.

Easier than saying, “If you’re going to consume dairy, make sure it’s always raw &/or traditionally cultured… and make sure any grains are ancient grains that have been traditionally sprouted or fermented… and definitely stay away from all gluten!”

Yeah. Just “go Paleo”. Seems so much easier to “prescribe” for the already-overwhelmed health-seeker sometimes! (At least ’til we’ve run the proper tests to rule in or rule out specific sensitivities.)

As simple as the Paleo diet should be, it doesn’t always seem that way to the newbie who’s just trying to understand the basic “rules” of Paleo. Or to the parents of a child with food sensitivities or intestinal permeability issues who want to make sure they’re doing things properly for their child’s health.

Paleo has clearly become the #1 most popular “diet” in North America. Of course, it’s not actually a “diet” at all for many Paleo followers. It’s a way of living.

Nonetheless, with so many on the Paleo bandwagon, opinions can differ on what truly IS and IS NOT Paleo.

Not such a big deal, really. For the most part, it’s all good.

But some folks need those details to be sorted out before they can really wrap their brains around this and move forward with it.

Well, I’ve got the brain-wrapping vehicle for YOU!

Introducing, Paleo Con!

Transitioning Away From Sugar & Carbs ~ Not Just A Weight Loss Issue!

Break Free From Carb & Sugar Addictions!

It’s a fairly regular occurrence in our practice and coaching that someone will ask for help with reducing their carb intake. Usually (but not always) it’s because they want to lose weight.

When the average person talks about carbs in this sense, they’re not talking about the valuable carbs (fresh fiber) found in fresh vegetables, for example. They’re typically talking about those gnarly “starchy carbs”.

Really, it’s not so much that they need help with decreasing their intake – since that would only be a matter of keeping your mouth closed and not eating it! – they want help with decreasing their intake and not feeling rotten or deprived in the process.

While there are many directions we could take with this little carb-reducing journey, these are 4 of the main points I typically make with patients from the start.

1) It’s important to know what you’re dealing with.

Many people still think I’m talking about adding a “spoonful” of sugar to their coffee when I ask about their sugar consumption… and they wonder what this has to do with their “carb” issue. I’ve had countless consultations where someone tells me they don’t use sugar, or they don’t add sugar to any foods, or they don’t even have sugar in the house… only to listen to them tell me 5 minutes later that they start their day with a bowl of cereal, or a bagel, or a piece of toast, or a flavored coffee on the way to work.

Then, it’s their sandwich or sub at lunch, and the pasta or pizza for dinner, the energy drinks and pop, the snack foods… it goes on and on.

It’s not just the Mary Poppins spoonful of sugar. It’s all the foods, beverages, and various ingredients that convert quickly (and in excess) to sugar. That’s one of the biggest issues with “carbs”.

I tell people to visually picture their starchy carbs as cup-fulls of sugar.

We have to consider the long & short-term health consequences of consuming all the bread, pasta, crackers, cookies, cereal, rice, etc.

  • One of the big problems with all this sugar intake is the massive stress effect on your blood sugar regulation, and your poor pancreas.
  • Sugar is considered “fuel” for cancer.
  • Additionally, these carb-based foods that the masses are consuming are rarely from pure, non-toxic sources. As a result, they cause additional issues with cellular inflammation and toxicity… which skews our hormonal communication system and metabolism, thus creating chronic challenges with getting “good” nutrition INTO the cell and “bad” waste OUT of the cell.

It’s quite the vicious cycle.

Inflammation, toxicity, and stress are the precursors to ALL chronic illness – cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hormonal resistance, autoimmune conditions, neurodegenerative conditions (MS, ALS, etc.), and so on.

On a more superficial note (compared to some of the aforementioned more serious long-term consequences of consuming carbs/sugars/grain-based foods) toxins are harbored in fat cells as an intelligent self-protective mechanism. The more toxic and inflammatory our diets, the larger our fat cells. The fat cells essentially trap the toxins to protect our more vital organs and systems. Decreasing the amount of toxicity helps the body more easily rid itself of excess body fat.

So, part one is to know that those food choices don’t come without consequence. They may be the popular, tasty, “status quo”… but look at the condition of our overall health in this culture that consumes excess carbs/ sugar! Consider the ever-increasing incidence of cancers, pancreatic issues, hormonal dysregulation, blood sugar imbalances & diabetes. Obviously, the status quo isn’t where we want to be.

Short term: these carbs & sugars cause us to gain weight & excessive body fat, maybe feel digestive distress, or lack of energy, or brain fog, or bloating, or chronic pain, etc…. but LONG term is far more dangerous.

2) At some point, you’ve just got to reclaim ownership of your body and wage a “strike” against these foods for a few days in order to break through the physical addictions. For most folks, that takes 4 or 5 days. Cut out all the culprits: bread, pasta, rice, cereals, alcohol, pop, energy drinks, fruit drinks, many condiments/dressings/dips/sauces, crackers, chips, pastries, baked goods, sweeteners, etc. and eat “clean” for a few days.

That’s enough to take care of the physical cravings. To take care of the mental and emotional attachments we have to these tasty toxins, you need to re-visit point #1… getting real with yourself and understanding the consequences of your choices.

I believe it’s always important to weigh the whole “pleasure vs. pain” deal. It’s a total mental thing once you get beyond the physiological cravings. So, you need to pay attention to what truly motivates you to act (or not act). Are you seeking pleasure by making healthy choices? Or avoiding pain by making those choices? And, vice versa: Are you seeking the short-term pleasure you associate with the more toxic choices? Or avoiding the perceived pain you associate with making healthier choices?

Once it becomes more painful to consume the foods that contribute to future illness, and more pleasant to consume foods that contribute to your future health, making healthier choices will become easier and more “second nature” for you. You might need to spend some time in “Head Space Boot Camp” ’til you get to where you want to be!

3) The strategy of ‘crowding out’ the tasty toxins with real, nourishing, whole foods is a powerful one. If, for example, you’re used to eating a bagel, or bowl of cereal, or piece of toast for breakfast, instead, you could opt for a few berries, and then some eggs and bacon/sausage or a protein smoothie, and maybe some green veggies. You don’t ‘need’ to eat the toast/bagel/cereal, at least not from a physical perspective. Your body doesn’t need more food.

I’ve used the phrase “Fuel up with health FIRST” for years with our kids. Give your body the healthier options first… then, as the theory goes, you may end up not wanting the less-than-healthy choice after… or at least not as much of it. If we ever opt for pizza (gluten-free or not), for example, we know we’re eating full salads &/or veggies first… then a little pizza. Crowd out the “bad”.

4) Substitution is a similar strategy and equally as powerful.

If you normally eat a sandwich, substitute with lettuce wraps, or the “insides” of the sandwich on top of a salad, or the “insides” on their own. Same thing with dinner – we do a lot of “wrap” ingredients on top of a salad, or lettuce wraps, or just meat with lots of veggies. Never underestimate the power of a bacon wrap or a bacon bowl!

amasai cultured dairy beverage breakfast smoothie

If we feel like having pasta, we can substitute with Paleo-like versions made from squash or cauliflower, for example. Or you can substitute traditional flour-based foods with coconut or almond flour. Substitute pop, juice, and alcohol for cultured & fermented beverages like Kombucha, Suero or Amasai that actually serve beneficial and nourishing roles.

Instead of common snack foods, like chips and crackers, have healthy go-to foods readily available for those times when the munchies strike: jerky, hard-boiled eggs, avocados/guacamole, chicken strips, veggies, any type of fermented foods, some raw nuts, protein smoothies… Just don’t become a chronic snacker, though. This leads us to become fat storers vs. fat burners.

Paleo and Paleo-like approaches are definitely the way to go if you’re looking to decrease (or eliminate) toxic, starchy carb consumption while simultaneously fueling your body with healthy, nourishing foods. I’ve got some Paleo resources on this site you can look into if you like: http://www.drmomonline.com/paleoresources/

With some lifestyle changes, it’s all about “baby steps”. But in the case of sugar and carb addictions, I’d actually recommend going cold turkey for a few days. This is the only way to break the physical addiction. Cheating, even a little, takes you back to ground zero! Sugar consumption leads to more cravings for sugar!

In case you didn’t see it, I recently referenced a sugar-addiction-breaking-program by Catherine Gordon here. While it’s no longer on sale, the full price is definitely well worth it if you’re looking to make this important nutritional upgrade. Click HERE to read that article and find her “Sugar Freedom” protocol.

Another super-successful approach to breaking through addictions to sugar, as well as other cravings, is to do the 14-day “Get Real” Jump Start Health Program by Beyond Organic. It’s like clockwork when folks follow this program – cravings are annihilated!

Remember, it’s not about being perfect. While it would be ideal to permanently rid ourselves of sugar and toxic carbs, if you can “strike” from the carbs/sugar/toxicity, and then go back to those foods LESS frequently, you’re already better off! The more you can avoid/substitute, the better.

It’s a daily ‘battle’ for many of us, for sure.

Let me know how you do… or how you’ve mastered this part of your healthy lifestyle in the past.

As you probably know, I’ve been watching The Gluten Summit this week (as much as I could squeeze in, anyway) just like so many of you, and been recommending it to all our patients and clients.

To say that this information is “very important” would be an enormous understatement.

The feedback from those who’ve joined in and watched has been 100% consistent……

  • The frequent hidden cause of “sore tummies” in children.
  • How a test can say you’re NOT sensitive, yet you feel better when a food is absent.

One More Reason to Avoid Conventional Dairy

The Truth About Nutrition

There’s one restaurant in our area where I feel “good” about eating the meat and having my kids eat it. They serve grass-fed bison and beef from local farms. So, when we go to this establishment, the kids know what they’re having – no need for a menu. Burgers it is.

I order mine up with big leaves of romaine or bib lettuce so that I can make a “Lettuce Burger”, or I’ll just chop it up and eat it with a fork. I’m just happy to get quality protein.

Recently, our youngest was putting up a challenge about why he couldn’t have cheese on his. “At home we sometimes have cheese on our burger… why not here?”

“At home, it’s organic cheese… and sometimes raw. Here, it’s conventional cheese. I don’t want you eating it. Your burger tastes perfectly fine with the lettuce, tomato, and onions. You don’t need cheese.”

Whine. Whine. Whine.

I get where he’s coming from. We often think a burger needs cheese.

And, honestly, it’s my fault. I’ve become a bit more lenient over time in some nutritional matters. While I won’t buy ‘conventional’ cheese (or any dairy, for that matter) for our home, I had become less of a watch-dog about it while eating restaurant food.

(And, no, I don’t worry about a calcium deficiency from not consuming conventional dairy. Conventional dairy is an abysmal source of quality calcium anyhow.)

As the kids get a little older, my focus has shifted from “food police/watch dog” to the person who provides them with science and evidence so that they learn to make healthier choices on their own. Sometimes it works. Sometimes, well, they’re just like their parents! Go figure. (Sigh)

So, back to the cheese.

When my son asked why I was getting on the case of his cheese, I told him I’d show him something when we got home. This is the little snippet of reference I showed him:

“LYMPHATIC PLAGUE

An epidemic rise in one under-publicized category of cancers should sound an alarm for all Americans. There is a powerful link to the dramatic surge in lymphatic cancer: the 1994 approval of the genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH).

Before 1995, lymphatic cancers were comparatively rare.

Today, if one adds up the total number of cancer deaths from breast, prostate, lung, pancreatic, and genital cancers, they do not cumulatively equal the number of deaths from lymphatic cancers. Do I have your attention?

This year Americans will consume nearly 180 billion pounds of milk and dairy products in various forms. That will average out to 666 pounds per American, nearly 40% of the average American diet. Cheese eaters, ice cream slurpers, and milk drinkers of both sexes and every age group will be ingesting dairy products from hormonally-treated cows.

Most Americans are unaware that laboratory animals treated with rbGH experienced enormous changes in their lymphatic systems. The spleens of these animals grew dramatically.

The controversial genetically modified cow hormone was approved for human consumption in February of 1994. Cancer statistics have recently been published by the U.S. Census Bureau comparing death rates from cancer by sex and age groups in 1980, 1990, and 1995. These data support evidence of a runaway plague.

All of America became a laboratory study for rbGH, which is now in America’s ice cream, cheese, and pizza.

There are small increases and decreases in lymphatic cancer rates from 1980 to 1990 depending upon sex and age group. What happened in 1995 represents the most dramatic short-term increase of any single cancer in the history of epidemiological discovery and analyses.

Ice cream.
Cheese.
Pizza.

Key players in The Standard American Diet.

We started naming names of all the people we know who have a lymphatic-based cancer. It IS unnerving.

Maybe it’s just coincidence… maybe not.

Our family is not perfect when it comes to nutrition. More often than I’d like, we opt for a meal at a local restaurant when we get out of work too late. When we can’t make it all the way to the one establishment that serves “clean” meat, we just have to do our best with what’s available.

Thankfully, more often than not, it doesn’t involve cheese.

At home, I’m teaching the kids to stick to more of a Paleo (or Primal) approach the vast majority of the time.

If there are grains and dairy on the menu, the source and quality is very different than conventional. e.g Sprouted, ancient, gluten-free grains, or raw, cultured, organic dairy from grass-fed (GreenFed) sources , or coconut milk.

For me, sometimes it just seems easier to go grain-free and dairy-free!

The Most Common Causes of Inflammation & The Relationship to Gut Health

fire

Inflammation is like a raging fire within.

We hear a lot about inflammation these days.

In a clinical setting, we’ve been talking about inflammation to our practice members for years. Along with toxicity, stress, and deficiency, inflammation is at the very heart of the causes of chronic illness and dysfunction.

However, I’ve noticed an interesting shift recently. We’ve got people seeking care for various reasons, who will tell us things like, “At times, I feel completely inflamed… like that’s what’s causing my problems. But my (conventional) doctor thinks I’m nuts!”

(Or, even worse, they’re put on anti-inflammatory meds or steroids as a result of expressing their concerns to their doc.)

It’s an intriguing time as a growing number of independent health seekers are searching for the root causes to their afflictions.

When we talk about inflammation, by the way, we’re talking about systemic inflammation… cellular inflammation. It’s not the same as twisting your ankle and then witnessing the localized swelling that results.

The inflammation we’re talking about here is far more insidious. It’s like a chronic irritant to our bodies and minds… like a fire quietly raging within.

It’s of particular importance to address inflammation of the gut. The gut is intricately tied to the brain and brain function, as cutting-edge scientific research continues to demonstrate. A “bad gut equals a bad brain”. Consider the potential for more accurately and successfully  treating (or preventing) conditions like depression, anxiety, spectrum disorders, Alzheimer’s, and so on. The gut must not be overlooked.

So, what causes inflammation? Lots.

Here are some of the most common factors associated with inflammation:

  • Diet – Eating “inflammatory” foods, especially grains like wheat, barley, and rye that contain gluten and introduce inflammatory proteins called prolamins. These chronically irritate the gut and contribute to gut permeability or “leaky gut”. Once the gut is excessively permeable, large molecules that were never intended to pass through the intestinal barrier are allowed to do so. This triggers an over-active immune response as the immune system goes on the attack, so to speak. One of the results of this heightened immune reaction is inflammation.

The 21-Day Sugar Detox

  • Sugar – Whether it’s the white powdery, crystal stuff right off the spoon or right out of a packet, or it’s foods and drinks that break down to sugar rapidly in our bloodstream (like juice, pop, sweets and starchy carbs like bread, pasta, cereal, crackers, pizza, baked goods & pastries) sugar spikes create a negative response across the board. Blood sugar dysregulation from chronic sugar spikes and insulin resistance are direct contributors to inflammation. Artificial sweeteners are clearly not a solution! These are highly toxic and contribute to inflammation as well.

  • “Bad” Fats – Another dietary culprit. These are the trans fats, hydrogenated & partially hydrogenated fats, commercial vegetable oils, the fat from contaminated animal sources, excess omega-6 fats & oils, and so on. These contribute to an inflammatory condition.  Stick with pure coconut oil, real grass-fed butter, organic extra virgin olive oil, healthy fats from grass-fed & free-range animal sources, wild fish, healthy fat foods like avocado, a balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fats, and so on. The “bad” fats are typically what we get with junk food, fast food, restaurant food, fried foods, and so forth. Even when we start with  “healthy” food, when we cook it with bad fats, the results are toxic and inflammatory.

  • Leaky Gut & Autoimmune Conditions – I know I just mentioned it, but it needs its own distinct place on this list. It’s a vicious cycle: leaky gut leads to inflammation… which leads to leaky gut… which leads to more inflammation. You get the point. This is an immune response, actually. The immune system is simply doing its job of attacking things that aren’t supposed to be there, like too-large molecules passing through the intestinal barrier. When this cycle continues, the stage is perfectly set for an autoimmune condition as the immune response continues on its attack “against” the body. The intelligent approach to correcting this is NOT to suppress the overall immune response, but to (1) remove the triggers, thereby ‘calming’ the immune response, and (2) heal the gut.

  • Stress – Whether it’s mental, emotional, or physical, chronic stress plays a direct role in cellular inflammation. Our bodies are perfectly suited to short bouts with stress – it’s called the “fight or flight response”. But, when we’re chronically exposed to stress, systems break down. This can be from ongoing financial issues, relationship challenges, career dissatisfaction, chronic sleep deprivation, injury, over-working, over-training (e.g. for a marathon), drugs, toxic foods… there’s no shortage of stressors! Stress creates a unique cascade of neuro-hormonal events in the brain and body that simply cannot be overlooked.

Yoga & Meditation are part of an “Anti-Inflammatory” Lifestyle

  • Toxicity – We are inundated with toxicity. Some of it, we can adapt to. Some of it, we cannot. Toxicity triggers a distinct chemical/hormonal response in the brain and sets off a chain of events throughout the entire body… inflammation being one of them. Look at the list about in the “stress” category – those are all sources of toxicity. To that list we can add environmental toxicity as well. Consider sources of toxicity from air, water, personal care products, household, garden, and lawn care products, cosmetics, heavy metals, vaccines, etc. It can be overwhelming to consider just how toxic our world has become. (It’s why I believe that a regular cellular detoxification protocol is so important.)

  • Chronic Sleep Deprivation – Hopefully, you can see the connection here… deprivation (or deficiency) anywhere along the spectrum of ‘things our body needs’ can lead to a toxic, inflamed situation. However, even ONE night of sleep deprivation (we’re talking 4 – 5 hours of sleep here) has been shown to significantly raise the markers of inflammation!

  • Chronic Alcohol Consumption – Alcohol contributes to leaky gut, as well as bacterial and fungal/yeast overgrowth in the intestines. It’s a highly concentrated dose of sugar, as well, triggering the body’s insulin response.

  • Drug Use – Many prescription and over-the-counter drugs directly contribute to inflammation themselves. One of these is NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like aspirin, ibuprofen, Celebrex, etc.). Research clearly indicates that even 3 days of taking over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen can cause inflammation and a leaky gut. Another family drugs directly linked to gut inflammation is antibiotics. Antibiotics do not only attack the intended target bacteria – they wreak havoc on ALL bacteria, including the “healthy” bacteria throughout our intestinal systems that are so critical to our overall health and immune function.

  • Nutritional Deficiencies – As I made reference to earlier, deficiency means we’re not getting what our cells required in order to achieve &/or maintain a state of homeostatic cell function. This can lead to inflammation as a result of the lack of key ‘ingredients’ required for proper digestion.

  • Low Hydrochloric Acid in the Stomach – Most people think that indigestion and acid reflux are th result of having too much acid in the stomach. Actually, most of the time, it’s just the opposite… especially as we get older. When we don’t have enough HCL to break down our food properly, we can experience the burning sensation as particles of food that are not properly broken down stay in the upper digestive track for longer than they should (because the body is saying “hey, this food is too big for me to pass along to the small intestines!”), or, if those food particles that are too large do get passed on to the small intestine, they cause breakdown of the intestinal lining… leading to leaky gut… which causes chronic inflammation.

(So, those acid pump inhibiting drugs you see on television? They end up causing the food to be pushed out of the stomach before it’s efficiently broken down – so you stop feeling the burn – but now you’ve set the stage for much bigger problems with gut permeability… leaky gut…inflammation… and setting the stage for an autoimmune condition over time.)

  • Hormonal Imbalance – This is a big one! We’re not just talking about reproductive hormones, or “women’s” hormones, which many people still assume when you mention the word “hormonal”! Hormones are the chemical messengers for all the systems of our bodies and they play a critical role in every function. One example of the hormonal-inflammation connection is with the stress hormone, cortisol. When our adrenal system is fatigued from chronic stress or toxicity, we can burn through so much of our stress hormone supply that cortisol becomes depleted. Unfortunately, cortisol is one of the things that our body uses to control the inflammatory process, naturally! On the flip side, when there is inflammation, the hormonal receptors on the cell membrane end up not being so ‘receptive’ to the hormonal message attempting to be delivered. This clearly results in hormonal dysregulation… the message can’t get to its intended destination, or the message gets skewed. A hormone drug or cream doesn’t solve this dilemma.

  • Infections – Bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic. These chronic, often undetected and un-treated, infections cause inflammation as the immune system is relentlessly on the attack, trying to keep the infection under control. One of the simplest things we can do to offset potential infection, particularly in the gut, is to replenish the gut with healthy, immune empowering bacteria in the form of high-quality probiotics.

  • Severe Brain Trauma – Remember the critical connection between the gut and the brain? Here, it plays out in reverse. If there is brain injury, that, in turn, has been shown to cause leaky gut in as little as six hours or less! Of course, this leads to chronic inflammation over time if not properly addressed.

While this list can seem daunting and impossible to overcome, it’s not. We can transition to a more “anti-inflammatory” lifestyle with relative ease.

Remember though, the “anti-inflammatory” approach will only get you so far. You’ve also got to heal & repair the gut, otherwise the inflammatory cycle can continue… even in response to “healthy” choices in diet, for example.

Please don’t fret! It’s not about being perfect. It’s about making better choices, more often.

Stick to “real” food vs. synthetic factory foods & junk food, stay hydrated, move your body, add something like yoga to nurture your overall health, have an outlet for stress, get enough sleep, be grateful, remove as many sources of toxicity as you can… it’s all good!

Every healthy choice adds up to make a positive difference… and you’ll never be able to take away a healthy choice that you made! Just focus of stringing more of them together each day… each week… for the long run. That’s how health is created.

Digestion & Gut Health (Part 1)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For many years now, one of the most popular health topics in our practice has been “digestion issues”. I kid you not, our “poop talks” have always been some of most popular!

Now, we call it “gut issues” and it refers to the stomach, small and large intestines, colon, gall bladder, liver, kidneys… and how, as a whole, these are all directly related to the brain. (More on that another time.)

The most common symptoms people seek help in regarding this area are: constipation, bloating, diarrhea, irregular bowel movements, excess gas, indigestion and discomfort after eating.

Sound familiar?

Acid pump inhibitors are not the answer. Tums ain’t gonna’ cut it.

If you’re experiencing any of the aforementioned body signals, why would you try to shut them up? Symptoms are your body’s way of telling you, “Houston, we’ve got a problem.”

Fix the cause of the problem instead of (exclusively) trying to get rid of symptoms.

If you want a different ‘result’, you’ve got to make different choices… you’ve got to DO something differently. Yes? Yes.

Thankfully, there are some very successful protocols for fixing the cause of the problem.

We’ve consistently seen an excellent response when someone with “gut” or digestive issues follows a 3-pronged approach to recovery:

1)      Remove the triggers.

2)      Heal the gut.

3)      Replenish with healthy choices.

In the first part of this little series, I’ll discuss the first component:

Remove the Triggers

There are foods, beverages, cooking oils, ingredients, drugs, etc. that have a consistent track record for wreaking havoc on our health – particularly our gut health. Some of the most common trigger foods are wheat (and any source of gluten), modern soy, conventional dairy, and corn.

Of course, we know there are other toxic foods that wreak havoc as well, the “Big 4” being bad fats, animal-based foods from toxic livestock, sugar, and then all the “fake” foods that are loaded with chemicals, artificial ingredients, and preservatives.

Over time, these foods (as well as other common non-food triggers like stress and drugs) may actually cause so much damage that the gut becomes “permeable”. Simply stated, this creates a situation where our intestinal barrier allows excessively large particles to pass through… initiating an immune response as a result.

This immune response is most likely actually “normPrimal Blueprint Meal Planal” and healthy. Your immune system is supposed to jump all over invading and foreign objects that are showing up where they shouldn’t be showing up. The problem isn’t necessarily in the immune system itself, but what the immune system is responding to.

When this immune response happens often enough (too often, in the case of gut permeability), for long enough, many folks are diagnosed with an “autoimmune” condition. They may also be told they have food sensitivities, allergies, or intolerances.

Sometimes, these diagnoses are accurate. Other times, they’re off-the-mark because it’s the permeability causing excess and too-large particles to cross the intestinal barrier and that’s what the immune system is all riled up about.

Honestly, some advanced laboratory testing (with a health professional experienced in “functional” lab tests and values) is the best way to determine whether this is accurate or not. (Contact me if you’d like help here – knowing which tests to order to get you the information you need, where to have them done, etc.)

Oftentimes, the person may not actually have a permanent autoimmune condition or food sensitivity… it’s just that they “can’t” get any better until they heal the gut. Until then, everything triggers a negative response.

These are the folks that seem to react to everything, are chronically inflamed (at a cellular level), and have pain or discomfort no matter what they eat.

So, step one is to remove the triggers. But, tied for first, is to heal the gut. Do you see why this is so critical? If you only remove the triggers – for example, going on a “gluten-free diet” – but you don’t fix the gut, you’re essentially chasing your tail. I’ll talk more about healing the gut in part two.

Even if you can’t have the official laboratory tests done yet, you can cut out the trigger foods for a minimum of two weeks and see how you do. Most people are shocked by how much better they feel when they do this, especially when they cut out all the bread, pasta, cereal, muffins & other baked goods/pastries, anything with gluten, conventional milk and dairy products (and cheese, yogurt), sugary foods, corn, and vegetable oils.

A couple others to experiment with removing from your diet are nuts and nut butters, as these can cause problems for some.

Give it a fair try – at least 2 weeks with NO cheating. Better yet, 4 weeks. Pay attention to how your gut feels and any changes in your bowels, as well as any changes in your skin, your sleep, your mental clarity and your sleep.

My guess? You’re bound to see improvements in most (if not all) of these if you stick to it… and don’t cheat.

Oh, as a bonus, you are almost guaranteed to lose excess body weight when you cut out these triggers!

* * *

Let’s get personal…

What’s your digestive issue or gut issue?

What have you tried that has worked well?

Have you been able to identify some triggers that negatively affect how you feel?

Feel free to contact me if you’d like personal help with accurate testing and a successful recovery program that suits your needs.

Please take a moment to share this article with others – digestive health problems are extremely common, and I’m sure your friends will find something here they could benefit from!
