Nutrition Upgrades With The Highest Return On Investment

The Truth About Nutrition

We know that a “healthy lifestyle” is comprised of several factors: nutrition, exercise, mental & emotional balance, stress management, proper sleep, and so on. Creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes ongoing effort and intention in the choice-making department.

In order to consistently move in the desirable direction along the ‘sliding scale of health’, toward optimal health and function, as opposed to loss of health, dysfunction, and dis-ease, we need to be intentional with our lifestyle choices.

When we add more “pure & sufficient” choices in the areas of diet, exercise, stress management, etc…. and reduce or eliminate “toxic & deficient” choices in these areas, we create the shift required for optimal health to be expressed.

This is what we’ve talked about in our practice and coaching programs for years. The lifestyle choices we make on a consistent basis will shape our overall health and level of function.

While ALL components of our lifestyle matter, nutrition plays a critically important and foundational role in shaping our health, how we feel, how we look, and how our bodies will respond to the daily stressors and toxicity thrown our way.

The ‘diet’ we encourage our practice members to consume is a low-toxicity, anti-inflammatory, low-sugar, balanced, REAL foods diet. This “healthy lifestyle diet” simply focuses on the least toxic sources of protein, fats, and plant-based foods, while staying properly hydrated with pure & beneficial beverages.

We avoid conventional grains and dairy, as well as man-made factory foods.

Ideally, we’re doing some type of cleansing and cellular detoxification on a ‘regular’ basis – whatever that means to you! It could be short cleanses every month, or more comprehensive detoxification seasonally. It’s nice to start our nutrition upgrades with a clean slate, so to speak.

These are the most important diet & nutrition upgrades we recommend:

  • Change to healthy fats and remove bad fats (no man-made synthetic fats, trans fats, or vegetable oils)
  • Upgrade your meat & animal food sources (grass-fed, pastured, free-range, drug-free, wild, cultured, lacto-fermented)
  • Decrease/eliminate refined grains and sugar
  • Eliminate gluten
  • Eat plenty of vegetables, some fruit, and add traditionally cultured & fermented foods
  • Add only the core nutritional supplements/complements that your body truly needs (is currently deficient in). e.g. most of us truly need to add beneficial bacteria in the form of superior quality probiotics, and most of us could use help with ongoing detox and adaptation to stress.
  • In addition to pure water, hydrate with beneficial & functional fluids (e.g. coconut water, fermented beverages, etc.)

When you follow these dietary recommendations, then we KNOW this is what’s happening:

  • There is a reduction of inflammation throughout your entire body
  • Your body is continuing the process of detoxification because this type of diet heals the cell membrane, where true detoxification must occur
  • Dysregulated hormone function is returning to more regulated hormonal function as the cell membrane continues to heal

The return on your nutrition investment is HUGE!

Inflammation, Toxicity, and Dysregulation of Hormonal Function are the 3 main players that set the stage for serious illness!

This means that your risk for EVERY serious, chronic, degenerative “disease of lifestyle” is significantly reduced the longer you follow this dietary approach!

“Let food be thy medicine.”

As a bonus, it’s also easier for your body to maintain an optimal body composition (weight, body fat percentage, lean muscle mass) with this type of diet and cleansing.

Instead of counting calories and food “points”, count your blessings… and choose better food!

Energy Drinks ~ Beneficial & Functional Beverages

Beneficial & Functional Beverages

I often find that when people are making the effort to clean up their diet, there’s the tendency to overlook the impact of beverages on our health.

We can get wrapped up in decisions like upgrading meats to grass-fed, and poultry & eggs to free-range, and vegetables and fruit to fresh organic… all excellent choices.

As we move along our journey of making better choices, it’s also important to remember all the foods, ingredients, and beverages that are lurking on the fringe. These are the things like: the oils we cook with, the seasonings we use, sauces, condiments, salad dressings, dips, snack foods, and beverages.

The conventional (“toxic”) beverages to be leery of are: pop (soda), energy drinks, sports drinks, juice drinks (and even juice), flavored coffee drinks, conventional coffee, diet drinks, and most alcohol.

What?! What’s left??

It’s funny how many nutritional consultations I’ve sat in where the person assumed the only thing they could drink, if they were trying to clean things up, was water. Water, water, water. Water with lemon. Water with orange slices. Water with frozen berries. Water with mint leaves. Water with cucumber slices. Water.

Pure water is undoubtedly critical to our health.

However, in addition to some classic choices, like pure-quality teas, and freshly made juices (bonus points if it’s vegetable-based), there are a number of other beverages we can upgrade to that provide immense health benefit… and add variety to the beverage component of our dietary intake.

These have become known as Functional Beverages.

Now, be careful here.

You can browse the cooler section of your local gas station and see a great number of  beverages referred to as “functional”. These are the sports & performance drinks, the enhanced fruit drinks, the various tea drinks, flavored water & vitamin water, and drinks with soy. Their labels tell us that these drinks will improve our heart function, our brain function, our athletic performance, our energy, our immune system, heal our joints, and possibly usher us into a state of bliss.

These are typically nothing but garbage. Good marketing for yet another toxic food choice.
Why? What’s wrong with these drinks?

The overwhelming majority of these functional beverages contain numerous toxic and dangerous ingredients.  These include sugar (in its myriad of forms), high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners/flavors/colors, preservatives, & synthetic vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

Many of them contain stimulants that create an artificial energy rush. (I know. There are times when, I don’t care if it’s “real” or “artificial”… I just need to serious energy!! But, there are better ways to get it.)

So, while these drinks may contain some nutrient value, and some anti-oxidants, once we mix them into a chemical concoction with all the toxic ingredients, you’ve over-powered the potential benefit. Now, they’re just another toxic drink. Tasty, but toxic.

The ideal functional beverage contains no chemicals, no additives, no preservatives, no artificial sweeteners, and no artificial colors. These drinks should come from real food sources, not from chemistry labs. These drinks should be low in sugar (and it should be a natural source of sugar) or naturally fermented to provide an abundance of high quality nutrients.

The process of lacto-fermentation makes the nutrients of these more traditionally prepared drinks more readily available. This is of particular benefit to our intestinal tract… which is where much of our health begins (and ends).

Personally, I have found that these natural functional beverages also do a superior job at truly quenching thirst.  On interesting note, it has been postulated by leading nutrition experts that our cravings for less-healthy drinks, like soft drinks and alcohol, actually stem from an ancient collective memory of the kind of lacto-fermented beverages still found in traditional societies.

Some of the Best Beneficial & Functional Beverages:

Coconut Water:  Here’s a great drink from a natural source. Young coconuts contain natural water within that is rich in potassium, and has been consumed throughout history. Coconuts are also rich in the healthy fats, MCTs (medium chain triglycerides). This sweet drink is an excellent thirst-quencher and naturally recharges the body.

Coconut water does contain sugar so it’s ideal to ferment it with a coconut kefir starter.  The coconut water kefir continues to have the benefits of coconut water, but now also has the immense benefit of live enzymes, probiotics and beneficial yeasts to truly support our health.

Be wary of conventional brands sold in mainstream groceries – many have high sugar content and additional ingredients.

Cultured/Fermented Whey:  This is Liquid Gold, people. Liquid Gold! The Ancient Greeks referred to it as “healing water”. Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, recommended cultured whey as a treatment over 2,400 years ago!

Whey is a natural byproduct of cheese manufacturing, after the milk has been coagulated with rennet to form cheese curds.  It is a solution of lactose in water along with minerals and lacto-albumin. As the lactose goes through a cycle of fermentation, the end result is lactic acid, beneficial microorganisms, and natural enzymes.

Cultured whey is a powerful natural sports drink since it contains such high levels of necessary electrolytes, like potassium, as well as probiotics, B vitamins, calcium, and naturally occurring carbohydrates for energy and recovery.

This kicks the pants right off that popular sports drink!

Whey is an abundant source of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA`s) and sulfur containing amino acids. BCAA`s are used to fuel, build and repair muscles and joints.  It is also rich in the sulfur-containing amino acid cysteine.  Cysteine is a critical component in the manufacturing of the super intracellular antioxidant, glutathione.

Cultured whey stimulates intestinal peristalsis, generates intestinal flora, stimulates the elimination of toxins, and eliminates excess water retention.

Now, that neon-colored artificially enhanced sports drink just ran to the locker room, completely embarrassed of its pathetic performance.

Suero Viv is one of our favorite beverages that fits the bill here.

On a similar note…

Cultured Dairy: Cultured dairy (like Amasai and traditional kefir) are powerhouse superfoods. They provide an abundance of essential nutrients that aid in digestion and help the body detoxify and overcome “bad bacteria”.

The surplus of probiotics found in cultured dairy don’t just serve to aid with detoxification and digestion, they also reduce inflammation, promote weight loss, and boost natural immunity.

Quality matters, especially when choosing any dairy product. Ideally, your cultured dairy should come from grass-fed cows (not grain-finished), organic sources, low-temperature processed or raw, and it should not contain the harmful protein beta-casein A1.

Amasai, in particular, is a powerful post-workout beverage. A 16-ounce serving contains 14 grams of highly absorbable whey protein, as well as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), calcium, vitamin D3, B vitamins, vitamin K2, and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Pow!

Kombucha:  The “soft drink” of the 21st century! This fermented beverage is loaded with healthy yeasts, enzymes, electrolytes, bacteria and other microorganisms. The fermentation process produces not only acetic and lactic acid, but also a small amount glucuronic acid – a potent detoxifier.

It is said that Kombucha aids the body in natural cleansing, boosts the immune system, and is even a valuable player in the prevention of cancer and other serious degenerative illnesses.

Bonus: it’s delicious and refreshing! It’s fizzy and energizing, acidic, yet slightly sweet. There are many flavors to choose from, or create, if you’re making it yourself.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Drinks:  ACV is a powerful tonic loaded with incredible “living” nutrients (the essential and beneficial enzymes haven’t been destroyed in the processing).  Choose ACV that is raw, unpasteurized, with the “mother” intact.  The mother is the non-liquid “stuff” you’ll see in the bottle. It’s the portion of the apple that is fermented and contains the source of the good bacteria and enzymes. Bragg’s is a great brand to choose.

Simply mix a tablespoon or two of ACV in a glass of water for a quick healthy tonic. If it puts a little too much hair on your chest at first, you can add a splash of real fruit juice, or a bit of raw honey or stevia. Some people I know like to add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg. I like it straight… and usally without the water. But, we are talking about “beverages” here! Bragg’s also has their own line of flavored ACV beverages.

Greens Drinks: Although not fermented, another favorite health-enhancing beverage around here is a “greens drink”. There are many great quality greens products on the market… and many that, once again, are over-hyped junk food in disguise. The greens we’ve used for years is Greens First. It can easily be mixed with water. Simple.

Greens beverages can be a fantastic addition to a healthy diet, providing super foods/super greens, organic fruits & vegetables, probiotics, soluble and insoluble fibers, herbs, spices, natural flavonoids and enzymes.

***

Thankfully, there is an ever-increasing array of healthy tonics to choose from in the health market these days, as well as created in your own kitchen.

We love these beneficial beverages so much that they’re a core component of our 2-Week Challenge.

What are your favorite beneficial beverages?

To Paleo or Not To Paleo? Let the Experts Help You Decide!

Paleo Con is Here!

I recently talked about this here… how I’m not 100% Paleo. More accurately, I’m not Paleo 100% of the time.

I go in phases. I will go for months without having any grains or dairy. But, then there are times when I choose to add some cultured dairy on a cleanse, or just as a functional beverage, for example.

However, in our practice and distance care programs, we recommend that many people with autoimmune conditions, leaky gut, and food sensitivities begin their healing process by “going Paleo”, at least for a period of time.

The Paleo diet does a nice job of removing the vast majority of inflammatory trigger foods, so it’s an easy recommendation to make.

Easier than saying, “If you’re going to consume dairy, make sure it’s always raw &/or traditionally cultured… and make sure any grains are ancient grains that have been traditionally sprouted or fermented… and definitely stay away from all gluten!”

Yeah. Just “go Paleo”. Seems so much easier to “prescribe” for the already-overwhelmed health-seeker sometimes! (At least ’til we’ve run the proper tests to rule in or rule out specific sensitivities.)

As simple as the Paleo diet should be, it doesn’t always seem that way to the newbie who’s just trying to understand the basic “rules” of Paleo. Or to the parents of a child with food sensitivities or intestinal permeability issues who want to make sure they’re doing things properly for their child’s health.

Paleo has clearly become the #1 most popular “diet” in North America. Of course, it’s not actually a “diet” at all for many Paleo followers. It’s a way of living.

Nonetheless, with so many on the Paleo bandwagon, opinions can differ on what truly IS and IS NOT Paleo.

Not such a big deal, really. For the most part, it’s all good.

But some folks need those details to be sorted out before they can really wrap their brains around this and move forward with it.

Well, I’ve got the brain-wrapping vehicle for YOU!

Why I Don’t Always Recommend The Paleo Diet

The Evolution of Modern Man

In our practice we regularly recommend a Paleo or Paleo-like approach as a foundational diet. Paleo does a good job of eliminating many of the most common foods that “trigger” a chronic inflammatory response: dairy and grains, to be specific.

I believe there are some very important and relevant caveats to consider regarding those two food groups, however.  Stay tuned…

In addition to grains and dairy, the traditional Paleo approach doesn’t permit nightshade vegetables (like tomatoes, pepper, or eggplant), tubers (potato, arrowroot), legumes (beans, peas, soy, peanuts), and many nuts. Sugars, refined salt, processed foods, and artificial ingredients are frowned upon.

What is recommended on a Paleo diet? Simply stated, foods that can be hunted or fished, like meat, organ meat and seafood and foods that can be gathered like eggs, fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, (some) nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices.

There was some question about the consumption of saturated fats in the early days of the Paleo Diet, including butter and coconut oil. Thankfully, some of the fresher scientific minds in the Paleo world have clarified that it’s the source of saturated fat that is the issue, not fat itself.

Saturated fat from unhealthy/toxic sources makes for unhealthy toxic fat. Saturated fat from healthy sources makes for healthy saturated fats. E.g. butter from grass-fed cows, grass-fed meats, eggs from free-range chickens, and so on.

There’s still some disagreement regarding some of the details in Paleo… like sweet potatoes, of all things. And eggs. And nuts. Life’s too short, if you ask me.

Overall, I believe the Paleo approach is a very good one… but not necessarily for 100% of people, 100% of the time, or as a permanent dietary choice.

Individual deficiencies and imbalances should always be taken into consideration.

If someone is showing signs of chronic inflammation and toxicity, and presenting with numerous symptoms, I’ve seen switching to Paleo bring near-miraculous health results. Like I said, it’s removing several of the major inflammatory triggers.

However, there are also situations for which I’d recommend including some foods that are not allowed on the Paleo diet.

For many people, incorporating superior quality raw, unpasteurized (or low-heat pasteurized), traditionally cultured dairy can be the key to turning their health around. I’ve particularly seen this to be true in the case of chronic gut or intestinal disorders. The easy-to-digest fat-soluble vitamins and abundance of health-enhancing probiotics are unmatched in beverages like Amasai.

This is clearly not the case with modern, conventional dairy, or even organic dairy.

We’ve recommended the addition of Amasai and/or Suero to many people’s diets for the incredible healing benefits not easily found in other modern foods. The dairy in these products is from a special breed of cattle that lack the inflammatory A1 casein protein, making it highly digestible and providing incredible healing benefits from the whole milk nutrients and extensive probiotic profile.

(Raw Dairy is now considered by some up-and-coming nutrition experts to be Paleo-approved, while others still believe it is not. A Paleo diet with dairy added in is called a Neo-Paleo diet, in case you need to know that for your next trivia game with your house guests!)

On the other hand, there are some foods that are core staples of the Paleo diet that I just don’t recommend consuming with any regularity – pork, shellfish, and catfish, for instance. Pigs are known to be common carriers of parasites and have been likened to other bottom feeders, like shellfish and catfish.

Oh, and I don’t really care that “snake” is an allowed Paleo food. Ain’t gonna’ happen. Call me closed-minded. Go ahead.

That being said…

What is now commonly referred to as the Paleo diet certainly does have its very positive elements:

•    Processed foods are avoided – the less toxic & inflammatory our diets, the better.
•    Sugar (and foods that quickly break down to sugar) is avoided – sugar is a key trigger for toxicity & inflammation
•    Wild caught meats and protein sources are recommended as the majority of the diet (rich in balanced omega-3 fatty acids for overall healthy function), and
•    Raw nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, fruit, and some nuts and seeds are recommended to make up the remainder of the diet

These are all very good dietary recommendations.

I won’t claim to be 100% Paleo, 100% of the time.

I go through cycles where I’ll follow a Paleo diet for several weeks or a few months, then I’ll either re-introduce something non-Paleo that I’ve been psychologically missing, or I’ll  do a cleansing/restoration protocol that includes the Amasai or Suero beverages.

In my opinion, that’s a fantastic reason for some people to intentionally come off the Paleo diet, at least for a short time. It’s why we incorporate the  14-day “Jump Start” and 3-day cleansing programs into our health recovery recommendations.

So what dietary approach should you follow? I normally like to say “Paleo-like”, or the Innate Lifestyle Diet, or, a cellular healing diet, or, my favorite… The Human Being Diet! That’s the diet that supports your optimal cell function and is comprised of “healing foods”. These are foods that typically follow a hunter-gatherer-like lifestyle approach, but also follow current science, and even many biblical nutrition principles. These healing foods are rich in nutrients, and poor in toxins.

Examples are:
•    Organic Grass-fed Meat and Wild Game
•    Free-range Poultry & Eggs
•    Wild caught fish
•    Grass-fed butter, ghee, pure coconut oil
•    Vegetables (including sea vegetables)
•    Herbs
•    Fruits – controlled consumption
•    Pastured (grass-fed) raw dairy
•    Traditionally cultured & fermented foods
•    Nuts (sprouted) – if you can tolerate them
•    Seeds (sprouted)

Let’s state the obvious here. Whether we agree 100% with the specifics of the Paleo diet or not, it clearly knocks the socks right off the Standard American Diet! No contest.

Transitioning Away From Sugar & Carbs ~ Not Just A Weight Loss Issue!

Break Free From Carb & Sugar Addictions!

It’s a fairly regular occurrence in our practice and coaching that someone will ask for help with reducing their carb intake. Usually (but not always) it’s because they want to lose weight.

When the average person talks about carbs in this sense, they’re not talking about the valuable carbs (fresh fiber) found in fresh vegetables, for example. They’re typically talking about those gnarly “starchy carbs”.

Really, it’s not so much that they need help with decreasing their intake – since that would only be a matter of keeping your mouth closed and not eating it! – they want help with decreasing their intake and not feeling rotten or deprived in the process.

While there are many directions we could take with this little carb-reducing journey, these are 4 of the main points I typically make with patients from the start.

1) It’s important to know what you’re dealing with.

Many people still think I’m talking about adding a “spoonful” of sugar to their coffee when I ask about their sugar consumption… and they wonder what this has to do with their “carb” issue. I’ve had countless consultations where someone tells me they don’t use sugar, or they don’t add sugar to any foods, or they don’t even have sugar in the house… only to listen to them tell me 5 minutes later that they start their day with a bowl of cereal, or a bagel, or a piece of toast, or a flavored coffee on the way to work.

Then, it’s their sandwich or sub at lunch, and the pasta or pizza for dinner, the energy drinks and pop, the snack foods… it goes on and on.

It’s not just the Mary Poppins spoonful of sugar. It’s all the foods, beverages, and various ingredients that convert quickly (and in excess) to sugar. That’s one of the biggest issues with “carbs”.

I tell people to visually picture their starchy carbs as cup-fulls of sugar.

We have to consider the long & short-term health consequences of consuming all the bread, pasta, crackers, cookies, cereal, rice, etc.

  • One of the big problems with all this sugar intake is the massive stress effect on your blood sugar regulation, and your poor pancreas.
  • Sugar is considered “fuel” for cancer.
  • Additionally, these carb-based foods that the masses are consuming are rarely from pure, non-toxic sources. As a result, they cause additional issues with cellular inflammation and toxicity… which skews our hormonal communication system and metabolism, thus creating chronic challenges with getting “good” nutrition INTO the cell and “bad” waste OUT of the cell.

It’s quite the vicious cycle.

Inflammation, toxicity, and stress are the precursors to ALL chronic illness – cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hormonal resistance, autoimmune conditions, neurodegenerative conditions (MS, ALS, etc.), and so on.

On a more superficial note (compared to some of the aforementioned more serious long-term consequences of consuming carbs/sugars/grain-based foods) toxins are harbored in fat cells as an intelligent self-protective mechanism. The more toxic and inflammatory our diets, the larger our fat cells. The fat cells essentially trap the toxins to protect our more vital organs and systems. Decreasing the amount of toxicity helps the body more easily rid itself of excess body fat.

So, part one is to know that those food choices don’t come without consequence. They may be the popular, tasty, “status quo”… but look at the condition of our overall health in this culture that consumes excess carbs/ sugar! Consider the ever-increasing incidence of cancers, pancreatic issues, hormonal dysregulation, blood sugar imbalances & diabetes. Obviously, the status quo isn’t where we want to be.

Short term: these carbs & sugars cause us to gain weight & excessive body fat, maybe feel digestive distress, or lack of energy, or brain fog, or bloating, or chronic pain, etc…. but LONG term is far more dangerous.

2) At some point, you’ve just got to reclaim ownership of your body and wage a “strike” against these foods for a few days in order to break through the physical addictions. For most folks, that takes 4 or 5 days. Cut out all the culprits: bread, pasta, rice, cereals, alcohol, pop, energy drinks, fruit drinks, many condiments/dressings/dips/sauces, crackers, chips, pastries, baked goods, sweeteners, etc. and eat “clean” for a few days.

That’s enough to take care of the physical cravings. To take care of the mental and emotional attachments we have to these tasty toxins, you need to re-visit point #1… getting real with yourself and understanding the consequences of your choices.

I believe it’s always important to weigh the whole “pleasure vs. pain” deal. It’s a total mental thing once you get beyond the physiological cravings. So, you need to pay attention to what truly motivates you to act (or not act). Are you seeking pleasure by making healthy choices? Or avoiding pain by making those choices? And, vice versa: Are you seeking the short-term pleasure you associate with the more toxic choices? Or avoiding the perceived pain you associate with making healthier choices?

Once it becomes more painful to consume the foods that contribute to future illness, and more pleasant to consume foods that contribute to your future health, making healthier choices will become easier and more “second nature” for you. You might need to spend some time in “Head Space Boot Camp” ’til you get to where you want to be!

3) The strategy of ‘crowding out’ the tasty toxins with real, nourishing, whole foods is a powerful one. If, for example, you’re used to eating a bagel, or bowl of cereal, or piece of toast for breakfast, instead, you could opt for a few berries, and then some eggs and bacon/sausage or a protein smoothie, and maybe some green veggies. You don’t ‘need’ to eat the toast/bagel/cereal, at least not from a physical perspective. Your body doesn’t need more food.

I’ve used the phrase “Fuel up with health FIRST” for years with our kids. Give your body the healthier options first… then, as the theory goes, you may end up not wanting the less-than-healthy choice after… or at least not as much of it. If we ever opt for pizza (gluten-free or not), for example, we know we’re eating full salads &/or veggies first… then a little pizza. Crowd out the “bad”.

4) Substitution is a similar strategy and equally as powerful.

If you normally eat a sandwich, substitute with lettuce wraps, or the “insides” of the sandwich on top of a salad, or the “insides” on their own. Same thing with dinner – we do a lot of “wrap” ingredients on top of a salad, or lettuce wraps, or just meat with lots of veggies. Never underestimate the power of a bacon wrap or a bacon bowl!

If we feel like having pasta, we can substitute with Paleo-like versions made from squash or cauliflower, for example. Or you can substitute traditional flour-based foods with coconut or almond flour. Substitute pop, juice, and alcohol for cultured & fermented beverages like Kombucha, Suero or Amasai that actually serve beneficial and nourishing roles.

Instead of common snack foods, like chips and crackers, have healthy go-to foods readily available for those times when the munchies strike: jerky, hard-boiled eggs, avocados/guacamole, chicken strips, veggies, any type of fermented foods, some raw nuts, protein smoothies… Just don’t become a chronic snacker, though. This leads us to become fat storers vs. fat burners.

Paleo and Paleo-like approaches are definitely the way to go if you’re looking to decrease (or eliminate) toxic, starchy carb consumption while simultaneously fueling your body with healthy, nourishing foods. I’ve got some Paleo resources on this site you can look into if you like: http://www.drmomonline.com/paleoresources/

With some lifestyle changes, it’s all about “baby steps”. But in the case of sugar and carb addictions, I’d actually recommend going cold turkey for a few days. This is the only way to break the physical addiction. Cheating, even a little, takes you back to ground zero! Sugar consumption leads to more cravings for sugar!

In case you didn’t see it, I recently referenced a sugar-addiction-breaking-program by Catherine Gordon here. While it’s no longer on sale, the full price is definitely well worth it if you’re looking to make this important nutritional upgrade. Click HERE to read that article and find her “Sugar Freedom” protocol.

Another super-successful approach to breaking through addictions to sugar, as well as other cravings, is to do the 14-day “Get Real” Jump Start Health Program by Beyond Organic. It’s like clockwork when folks follow this program – cravings are annihilated!

Remember, it’s not about being perfect. While it would be ideal to permanently rid ourselves of sugar and toxic carbs, if you can “strike” from the carbs/sugar/toxicity, and then go back to those foods LESS frequently, you’re already better off! The more you can avoid/substitute, the better.

It’s a daily ‘battle’ for many of us, for sure.

Let me know how you do… or how you’ve mastered this part of your healthy lifestyle in the past.
