Time to get back into shape?

If you’re new to exercise, or are just beginning on a healthy lifestyle plan, I highly recommend daily walking as your first form of exercise. It’s good for your overall health, it’s a great stress-management tool, and you can do it almost anywhere… for the rest of your life. It’s an important foundational movement pattern to adopt.

However, if you’re ready to step up your fat loss exercise plan, it’s hard to beat the Turbulence Training program by my Canadian brother, Craig Ballantyne.

I’ve shared his work with readers here before. Craig is the real-deal and he knows his stuff when it comes to exercise, fitness, fat loss, nutrition, and how to maximize the results of your efforts.

Turbulence Training 2.0 is the workout program I’ve chosen to start my New Year with. (I like to change up my approaches a few times throughout the year to keep things fresh.)

The next 3 months’-worth of workouts will revolve around Turbulence Training… with a little add-on here and there. The workouts are 30 minutes, performed three times per week.

Here’s and example of a recent workout from the program Turbulence Training 2.0. I did this two days ago and I’m still feeling it in my legs! Love that!

(If you’re not familiar with some of the exercises listed below, the easiest thing to do for now is to look them up on YouTube.)

This workout is no joke – please don’t do it if you’re a beginner! (Don’t worry, though – Craig has 6 weeks of Beginner Workouts in his Turbulence Training system, complete with follow-along videos.)

Here’s the workout that had me at “hello”!

 

Warm-up Circuit:

Go through 2 times with no rest between exercises.
– Rest 20 seconds between circuits.

o    Prisoner Squat – 20 seconds
o    Pushup or Kneeling Pushup – 20 seconds
o    Stability Ball Leg Curl – 20 seconds
o    Band Pull – 20 seconds

 

Metabolic Resistance Training Circuit #1

1A) Dumbbell (DB) Goblet Step-Up – 30 seconds per side
– 15 seconds rest/transition.

1B) T-Pushup (alternating sides) – 30 seconds
– 15 seconds rest/transition.

1C) KB (Kettlebell) or DB Swing – 30 seconds
– Rest 30 seconds

Repeat 1 more time for a total of 2 circuits.

 

Metabolic Resistance Training Circuit #2

2A) 1-Arm DB Squat & Press – 40 seconds per side
– 20 seconds rest/transition.

2B) DB Renegade Row (alternating) – 40 seconds
– 20 seconds rest/transition.

2C) Suspension Y’s or DB Rear-Delt Raise – 40 seconds
– 20 seconds rest/transition.

2D) Suspension Curls or DB Curls with Palms-up – 40 seconds
– Rest 30 seconds

- Repeat 1 more time for a total of 2 circuits.

 

Metabolic Bodyweight Finisher

3A) Narrow-Stance Bodyweight Squat – 20 on, 10 off x 4 rounds

3B) Jumping Jacks – 20 on, 10 off x 2 rounds

3C) Narrow-Stance Bodyweight Squat – 20 on, 10 off x 4 rounds

3D) Jumping Jacks – 20 on, 10 off x 2 rounds

 

Holy sweat balls! Um, I mean “Awesome Sauce”! This is a good workout! (Actually, I really liked the one that came before this one, too… and the one before that…!) I like shorter workouts than this one, too… that’s why I’m doing some other add-ons for the next few months.

Long gone are the days when I drink in excess on New Year’s Eve. Ah, that youthful ignorance! Can’t say I miss it much!

I’ve been reading some of the latest research about the effects of sugar lately. It ain’t pretty! One name that has popped up a few times is Catherine Gordon… the “sugar expert”. She’s the creator of  Sugar Freedom.

(Don’t even mention sugar substitutes as a “solution”! These are even more toxic… and are mostly targeted to our brains!)

If you’re struggling to lose fat, you’re probably consuming MORE than the average person. 23 teaspoons of sugar a day is almost the equivalent of 20 bags over the course of a year!

I remember giving a Metabolic Weight Loss seminar in our practice a couple years ago, and one lady in attendance assured me that she consumed FAR more than 20 bags in a year! She told me with conviction that she most likely consumed at least 2 bags per week!! And, she literally meant “the bags” of sugar. She said that didn’t even count the bagel at the drive-through each morning, and the fast-food sandwich everyday at lunch! Nope, that was just the “bags” she went through with her routine baking and cooking.

Good heavens.

The trend in the last couple decades is that our FAT consumption has decreased with the age of low-fat, fat-free and diet foods that so-called “health experts” told us we should consume (gimme a break!)… and, our SUGAR consumption has sky-rocketed.

 

So, how are we doing?

Anyone else noticing that obesity rates are out of control and STILL climbing? How about cancer? Diabetes? Heart disease? Cholesterol & blood pressure problems? Hormonal imbalances?

Low fat and high sugar is THE #1 dietary approach to make you SICK.

So, what can we do?

Well, getting rid of the sugar in our diets is an obvious answer… but not necessarily an “easy” one to implement.

Sugar is EVERYWHERE. And, to make matters very, very challenging, sugar is a serious addiction.

We make it sound cute when we describe it as a “sweet tooth”. It’s not cute. Unless you think cancer is cute, too.

Overly dramatic? No. I think a few generations from now,  they’ll look back on our eating habits and wonder what on earth we were thinking, voluntarily destroying our own health like that with sugar, as well as other toxic foods.

Personally, I know it’s time to get this (excuse me) crap out of my life at a more serious level.

I eat very few sweets and grain-based foods compared to the masses, but I know I still consume far more than my body would prefer.

My brain is quite talented at justifying the occasional dose of sugar, whether it’s from a piece of gluten-free toast, or a glass of wine. It’s all sugar.

My educated brain knows this. My bratty, childish, addictive brain is a pain in my hind-quarters, however.

been in the gym (working out or training others) for 20 hours a
week for over a decade. I know what is possible more than those
naysayers.

“We Need To Eat Some Junk Food So We Won’t Get Really Sick!”

The Truth About Health

No, I didn’t fall and hit my head. Those words in the title were recently spoken directly to me… and I have since recovered from my fit of laughter enough to write about it!

I was chatting with a mom and her teenage kids about the health benefits of doing our “2-Week Transform-Your-Health Cleanse”. Specifically, we were talking about making healthy food choices and upgrading our nutrition.

I’ve heard a lot of things over the years when it comes to nutrition choices. People, myself included, are very creative when it comes to justifying their unhealthy choices!

  • I’m stressed out.
  • I’m sad.
  • I’m happy.
  • I’m bored.
  • I’m busy.
  • Eating healthy is too expensive.
  • Just this once.
  • A little bit won’t hurt me.
  • All good things in moderation.
  • I don’t have time to make healthy food.
  • I live alone… I don’t want to cook for one.
  • Everybody else eats it.
  • I don’t want to miss out.
  • It’s fast/easy/cheap/convenient.

I feel your pain. I think I may have said every one of these at some point in my life.

I’d have to say, though, that two justifications that can get under my skin at times are:

“If you don’t give your kids (fill in the blank for whatever toxic food choice is being discussed), then you’re depriving them of  ‘normal’ childhood experiences.”

(When one of my children’s teachers spoke those words to my face years ago – in response to my concerns about the daily doling out of graham crackers, pretzels, cookies, granola bars, goldfish crackers, and popcorn… plus regular pizza parties, ice cream parties, and birthday cakes & cupcakes multiple times each month – I knew right then and there that I’d be home schooling!)

And the other justification that I hear quite often, that one of the aforementioned teenagers tossed my way as a reason why they shouldn’t eat the healthy foods as recommended in the 2-week program…

“… Besides, if you eat *only* healthy food then your body’s just gonna’ freak out when you DO have junk food… and then you’ll really get sick. You NEED to have some junk food regularly so that you don’t get sick when you eat junk food!”

Now, there’s some winning logic.

C’mon! We can’t really believe those words as they’re coming out of our face, can we??

Let’s not overlook the fact that your body IS freaking out every time we feed it toxic junk… we just don’t immediately see or feel the consequences of those choices… and we certainly don’t feel what’s developing beneath the surface.

There are limitations of matter, you know! The body can only put up with so much abuse!

I asked this teen if she was going to apply the same logic to her choices regarding alcohol and drug use…

“I should have some alcohol here and there, on a regular basis, otherwise, my body will really freak out and get sick when I DO have a drink someday!”

She pulled a cranial muscle, rolling her eyes at me with such force.

Ah, good times!

 

We all have our issues. We all have to make choices when it comes to those less-than-perfect foods and beverages that we choose to consume.

I just think we need to get real with our reasons for not making the healthiest choices we can, given our current level of knowledge on the subject, and the resources we have available.

Saying something silly, like you’re depriving yourself of something if you have a healthy diet, or that you need junk food regularly so that you don’t get sick when you eat junk food, just makes you sound… well… silly.

Some things are better left unsaid. :)

Simple Health Tip: Words to Avoid on Restaurant Menus

The Truth About Nutrition

Some sources claim that, on average, Americans eat approximately 1/4 of their meals in restaurants. At this time of year, the number of meals eaten out increases.

Those restaurant meals are often made with unhealthy fats & oils, conventional meats & animal products, refined sugar & grains, and toxic ingredients like artificial colors, sweeteners, flavors, modern soy, excess sodium, gluten, GMO corn & its derivatives… and it’s typically higher in calories than what you could whip up at home.

A word on calories…

When you start talking about making healthier choices from a menu, it’s interesting how many folks automatically assume they should choosing foods that claim to be lower in calories or fat for the purpose of watching their weight.

While they get points for their intention, they’re off-the-mark with their strategy!

Look around you. Look around this nation. We have a weight problem, my friends. Yet, our grocery store shelves and restaurant menus are loaded with items that are “fat-free”, “low-fat”, “low-calorie”, “diet”, “sugar-free”, “healthy choices”, and so on.

If weight were as simple as the number of calories and the amount of sugar , we wouldn’t have such a problem with our weight… or our health. We could simply eat sugar-free, fat-free, and diet food day in and day out, and we’d be lean and healthy… right? However, our weight problems AND our health problems are due (in large part) to the QUALITY of the calories we consume.

These toxic and deficient foods also increase inflammation and interfere with hormonal communication at the cellular level. This leads to a host of chronic health conditions, weight loss resistance being just one.

So, while it can be challenging to find the perfect health-enhancing meal at a restaurant, many of us still find it fun to go out, enjoy the company of others, and have someone else do the prep and clean up. There’s the whole social component to consider, right? That’s part of our health, too. At least that’s how I justify those restaurant meals sometimes!

In all seriousness, we can make some upgrades to our dining out experiences by paying close attention to the verbiage on the menu, and asking the right questions to your server, or a manager, if necessary.

There are certainly some words to avoid on a menu… or, at least be wary of. In some cases, the reason is obvious – you’re most likely going to ingest the calories that a football team could ingest with that one menu item! In other cases, you simply need to ask more questions about the type of fat or oil used, for example.

Many “health experts” would tell you to avoid items made with butter, like creamy sauces, for example. I’ll tell you to avoid things made with “fake” butter and conventional vegetable oils! Those are toxic! The same is true of cheese. Sorry to be a heart-breaker, but conventional cheese is a toxic, inflammatory food. It’s not just about the calories.

To make it up to you, let me remind you that REAL butter, made from the milk of grass-fed cows especially, is considered a “Health Food” by many leading nutritionists! It’s a great source of the fat-soluble vitamins our brains so desperately need.

 

Here are some menu words to avoid or be careful of:

  • battered
  • deep-fried/fried/pan-fried
  • smothered/loaded/covered
  • crispy
  • golden
  • au gratin
  • Alfredo
  • bottomless/heaping
  • creamy/buttered
  • scalloped
  • diet
  • low-fat/fat-free – What is substituting for the real fat?
  • lean – OK, if it’s conventional meat. If it’s grass-fed, free-range, wild-caught, or wild game, the fat is higher quality and is more beneficial.
  • sugar-free – What is the substitute sweetener?
  • seasoned – With what, exactly? Conventional seasonings are riddled with “excitotoxins” that specifically target the brain and Nervous System. Nothing wrong with real, unadulterated, or fresh seasonings, herbs, & spices
  • healthy – Why? Often, when vegetable oils are used, they’ll call it “healthy”… or when a low-calorie dressing or sauce is used, for example.
  • gluten-free – This is a wonderful choice to see on a menu. However, some gluten-free food is simply toxic junk food riding on this ‘fad train’. If it’s made with modern soy derivatives or GMO corn instead, that’s not good either. Be careful here.

Unfortunately, much of the time in mainstream restaurants, adding sauces, dressings, dips, and toppings adds up to unhealthy, excess fat and calories… and toxicity.

If all the meat, dairy, and animal-based choices came from grass-fed, wild, free-range, unpasteurized, raw (dairy), and ‘non-drugged’ sources, then we could enjoy these rich add-ons without much concern. Real food, raised right.

 

Here are some healthier food preparation words we can look for on menus, or for:

  • baked
  • broiled
  • grilled
  • steamed
  • roasted
  • stir-fried/sauteed (maybe – depends on the oil they use)
  • poached
  • or, raw!

 

Other words for the savvy restaurant-goer to look for:

  • grass-fed
  • free-range/cage-free
  • pastured
  • organic
  • wild-caught (e.g. salmon)
  • wild game
  • gluten-free (see above list!)
  • cultured/fermented
  • sprouted

 

In general, these healthier adjectives can help point conscious restaurant eaters in a better direction.

However, you’ve still got to know:

1) What it was cooked IN or WITH, when it comes to fats & oils. Real butter and ghee are good choices, and pure coconut oil is a definite winner. Olive oil shouldn’t be heated about medium-low temperatures… and many say it shouldn’t be heated at all. Save it for salads.

2) What was added to it once it was cooked. Butter? Fresh herbs? All-natural spices & seasonings?

Be mindful.

Choose your restaurants wisely – you want to find establishments that are receptive to your healthy requests.

And, let’s not overlook the obvious: the vast majority of the time, your healthiest choice will be to choose (or grow, or raise) your own food, cook it at home using ingredients you trust, and enjoy it at home.
