I’ll Be Glad When “Pink October” is Over!

Breast Cancer Awareness

On many levels, October gets on my nerves.

Breast Cancer Awareness month is mentally and emotionally exhausting.

I’m tired of all the “Walk for a Cure” events. I’m tired of pink ribbons everywhere. And I just really can’t stand NFL players and personnel proudly displaying pink for the entire month.

I know full well that I’m treading on sacred ground here. But, before you jump all over my case, let me remind you that my own mother died from breast cancer. I was with her every step of the way as she dealt with the ravages of cancer. I have a personal opinion on this matter, as well as an educated one. It’s sacred to me, too.

I’m not “un-feeling” or “cold-hearted” when it comes to breast cancer.

Quite the contrary, in fact.

Cancer scares the crap out of me.

I do despise the pink ribbon campaigns, however.

I appreciate any effort to provide emotional support and connections for those dealing with breast cancer, as well as their loved ones. I agree with honoring those who are ‘fighting the battle’ or who have ‘lost the battle’.  I wholeheartedly agree with honoring the people.

I just disagree with the lies and propaganda surrounding what the mainstream presents as “prevention” and “research for a cure” when it comes to their fundraising.

Let’s not confuse the issue (or pull on our heart strings by exploiting “survivors”) by leading us to believe we’re any closer to a medical cure or preventing cancer in the first place. Nope, not with the current focus of ‘research’ at least.

I’m also a little unclear as to who on earth, in this day and age, in our culture, might be UNaware of breast cancer at this point… to the extent that money needs to be raised to increase their awareness??!!

More money does not mean less cancer.

Prevention means not developing cancer in the first place. That’s not a drug or pharmaceutical problem to be solved, in my mind. That’s largely an issue of epigenetics – what ‘environment’ our cells are most consistently exposed to that will determine our genetic expression.

Hard to patent that and financially profit from it, I suppose.

I’m not dogmatic enough that I wouldn’t love it if a drug came on the market that could actually cure cancer AND not cause additional harm.

I would have done just about anything for my mom, if I thought it would save her life &/or improve the quality of her life.

The thing is, I believe there are already cures out there. I’m not alone.

When I hear “research for a cure”, it gets translated in my head to “research for a pharmaceutical-based cure that we can make billions from”.

Cynical? Maybe. Maybe not.

Again, my eyes are wide open. I know this is sacred ground.

No matter how the numbers are spun, the incidence of breast cancer is NOT declining. The mainstream does not have the answers to cancer. There’s more “statistical trickery” than we could possibly shake a stick at.

I’ve said it a million times here: I choose to believe that the individuals working on the front lines of the cancer industry do so because they feel they can really make a difference… that they’re offering the best care possible. I’ve met some lovely people over the past 12 years in dealing with cancer in our family.

The theory and science of conventional oncology are what troubles me… not the people working from within who truly believe in what they’re doing and saying. Well, at least for the most part they don’t trouble me! There are times…

Every October, our town hosts an expo event that caters to women. Of course, the entire theme is related to breast cancer. Breast cancer “awareness”… breast cancer “prevention”… breast cancer “early detection”. There is pink e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e. Ribbons, balloons, goodie bags, cookies & cupcakes…

Hundreds and hundreds of women attend this event. It’s the perfect demographic, if you will, for our Wellness practice… since it’s typically women who make the health care decisions for their family. It’s a smart business decision for me to be there.

I’ve participated as a vendor for the majority of years we’ve been in practice. I’ve even been a featured speaker a few times. It’s an event with the best of intentions.

But, I just couldn’t do it this year.

Every year, I cringe while I’m there. Every year, my heart gets ripped out of my chest when I hear the lies and see the propaganda everywhere… and meet the women who have bought into it… and hear their stories and listen to what they’ve been told and how they’ve chosen to treat breast cancer.

The main financial purpose of the event is to raise funds for women who can’t afford mammograms… i.e. “early detection”. Thank goodness they changed the verbiage on that a few years ago, because they used to call that “prevention”.

If a mammogram doesn’t detect a problem ’til it’s there, obviously that’s not “preventing” anything!

On a side note, I’m not a fan of mammograms, in general. Radiating breast tissue while it’s being deformed is questionable at best. I’m a much bigger fan of self-exams and non-invasive thermography.

Here’s the thing that really gets to me now with this women’s event – a few years back, alcohol was added to the mix. Pink martinis “FOR THE CAUSE” became all the rage.

Add that to the toxic food served at the venue AND all the baked goods, sweets, and junk food offered at countless vendors’ booths, and I just couldn’t take the hypocrisy of it anymore!

Sugar is food for cancer.

Encouraging women to get boozed up and loaded up with cookies & cupcakes adorned with pink icing… FOR THE SAKE OF CANCER PREVENTION AND A CURE… is bordering on criminal in my mind.

Like I said, the intentions are good.

The actions are ludicrous.

If I choose to have a glass of wine or a martini or a cookie or a cupcake, I do so with the understanding that it’s NOT a healthy, immune-supportive choice. And, I certainly don’t CELEBRATE my unhealthy choice. It’s not something I’d encourage, for crying out loud.

I’m all about “feeling good”… and feeling connected to others. That’s part of a healthy life, too. There’s just something about presenting cancer-provoking choices in a positive light, at an event aimed at a “cure for cancer” that makes my stomach turn.

I don’t have the answers to walking that fine line of “enjoying life” (or, more accurately, enjoying the “tasty toxins” of life!) and living a lifestyle that prevents serious illness like cancer. I guess we could all be better about celebrating and enjoying more of our healthy choices, and not so much the unhealthy ones.

Let’s be honest. More money does NOT mean less cancer… particularly when we continue to spend our money on an idea that’s flawed from the get-go.

If we truly want to talk about “preventing” cancer, the conversation needs to shift to educating people about proactive choices, rather than reactive treatments.

And, if we miss the boat when it comes to prevention (as many of us will in this very toxic world where it’s predicted that 1 out of every 2 of us will develop cancer in our lifetime), then we need “reactive” treatments that don’t simultaneously destroy our health &/or we need to be informed of supportive measures that can be taken alongside the more hardcore treatments. It’s called Integrative care. There should be no pedestals in cancer care.

We need to talk about choices that support and enhance the integrity of our cell function… not sabotage our cell function. Let’s spend some money on that.

Now, I know many of you are reading this thinking, “But, wait! My friend/mom/grandmother/aunt/sister had breast cancer and did the chemo and radiation and takes hormonal medication… and she’s FINE years later!” Thank God. Truly.

I love those stories! I am human, remember? In fact, you may recall that I’ve repeatedly requested those stories for a project I’m working on that will focus on the very human side of the cancer journey. There are “survivors” in both camps of cancer treatment, no doubt.

While I love the individual stories of overcoming cancer (and the conventional treatment for cancer) and rebuilding health, I still just strongly dislike the large-scale brainwashing, statistical spinning, flawed theories, hypocrisy, and fear-mongering that is at an all-time high when October rolls around each year.

I sincerely support each individual in making the treatment choices that feel right for them. After considering your countless options, both holistic and mainstream, and chemotherapy or radiation is what you truly feel will help you the most, then do chemo or radiation!  (I pray you do supportive integrative care, too). On an individual basis, do what you’ve gotta’ do! Everyone else can bugger off.

Again, just quit with the large-scale lies to the entire population.

I don’t think we know what we’d really do as individuals until faced with that situation head-on. Who knows what I would opt for to “knock cancer down” a bit so that I could get to the work of restoring health and function? I could sit here at my desk and claim that I’d “never choose dangerous conventional oncology.” That would be ignorant and foolish on my part. I simply don’t know.

Having said that, I’m still fairly certain there are some conventional treatments that I’d have a hard time wrapping my scientific brain around… like lopping my breasts off because “cancer runs in my family”. It doesn’t work like that. That would give me no peace of mind whatsoever.

I also wouldn’t assume that I’m “cancer-free” after treatment. I’d spend the rest of my life making choices that would keep cancer at bay and health at the forefront. Cancer is a chronic illness that can be successfully managed.

The more we take the initiative and time to learn, the more aware we are of our many options, the more diverse (and successful) our personal treatment choices will be if the time ever comes. That’s where our efforts to raise awareness are needed… regarding the options we have. Neither of my parents were presented with ANY options – it was like a cookbook recipe where there were no substitutions allowed whatsoever for fear of bucking the system.

Ridiculous.

On a personal note, October is also the month that we took my mom in to the hospital, and she never came out. It’s the month that I spent her final weeks with her. It’s the month that I sobbed as I packed a suitcase for an undetermined length of time… knowing that I most likely also needed to pack clothes for a funeral. It’s the month I watched my best friend suffer and slip away a bit more each day. It’s the month I watched my Dad have his heart ripped out… and felt his fear and agony each and every day. All those pink balloons and ribbons in the hospital didn’t change a thing.

Yes, I’ll be glad when October is over.

The real solutions for the long run lie outside the pink.

The #1 Exercise to Alleviate Low Back Pain

I recently discussed chronic back pain from a Doctor of Chiropractic’s perspective… and how you MUST take an active role in your own healing in order to achieve optimal results.

Here are some more goodies for you… If you have chronic back pain, give this exercise a try:

 

 

(I think someone may have forgotten the word “pain” in the title… but I’ll bet you get the point anyway!)

Sure, there are many other stretches and exercises you could do. I like this one because ANYONE can do it, ANYWHERE. (Ok, maybe not right in the middle of the sermon at church… or while your airplane is taking off… but in most places and at most times!) You don’t have to get down on the floor, or hang upside down from something, or have someone assist you with this.

It’s simple and effective.

But it works best when you do it… not just look at the pictures of it. ;)

Here’s another great one to add to your daily routine…

 

 

One final tip for today, when you’re sitting at your desk or at the table, scootch toward the front of your seat, place both feet flat on the floor, and rock your pelvis forward to accentuate the forward curve of your lumbar spine (as opposed to sitting with your tailbone tucked underneath you with your lumbar spine collapsed).

Then, get your head back over your spine. Basic anatomy & physiology: your brain likes being over its ‘tail’, the spinal cord.

Better function, better feeling, better looking.

When you sit with your pelvis rocked forward to restore your lumbar curve, it will feel like you’re sticking your buttocks out behind you. Yep. Then you’ve probably got it right.

You might feel some muscles working in the low back… and you might not like it when you first do this. Yep. Then you’ve probably got it right! Those postural muscles have become lazy, weak, and wimpy over the years… it’s time to whip them back into shape!

Is It Really Possible to “Fix” Your Back Pain… For Good?

Are you one of the millions of North Americans who suffers from back pain?

As a Chiropractor, can you imagine the number of times I’ve taken care of someone with low back pain over the past 18 and a half years in practice???

(By the way, I started in practice when I was 10, thank you very much.)

Here’s my confession. Low back pain is my least favorite “condition” to work with.

Why? Oh, several reasons.

First and foremost, unbeknownst to many, Chiropractic is not about “fixing pain”. Chiropractic is about improving function.

That could mean a decrease or elimination of pain, no doubt about it. I’ve seen it countless times.  But it could also mean improved mobility, improved immune response, improved sleep, improved digestion or elimination, improved respiratory function, improved hearing or vision, improved energy, or improved mental clarity, improved attitude and mood… it’s not all about pain.

And, it’s not all up to the Doctor of Chiropractic. Believe it or not, we can’t magically control what your body will DO with the newly improved nerve flow once the adjustment is delivered! Your Creator has got that one under control! ;)

So, I combine my years of experience and intuition, with training, knowledge, and technical skill… then say a prayer that the adjustment helps where help is needed (and/or wanted) most.

However, low back pain can be tricky.

Those are some BIG muscles down there! Sitting, poor posture, lack of full motion over the years, stress, nutritional imbalances, injuries, muscle imbalances… they ALL contribute to chronic low back pain.

How is a Chiropractic adjustment supposed to fix ALL that??

We each need to step up and take on the responsibility of helping our own bodies get well and stay well.

I’ve met too many folks who come in with chronic back pain, telling me they’ve had it for weeks, or months, or years… but yet they haven’t really been doing anything on their own to work on it. No movement, no postural corrections, no de-stressing, no correction of nutritional imbalances… Yikes!

It can be a tall order to “fix” that for someone! It’s hard to undo weeks or months or years of abuse with an adjustment! (or a round of physical therapy, or a pain med, or a massage, etc.)

The people I see who very successfully overcome both their acute AND chronic low back pain for good, are the ones who, in addition to regular Chiropractic care,  add some specific, very targeted exercises to their recovery protocol.

(Also, it helps to remove the physical stressors that continue the cycle of low back pain, quit eating such an inflammatory diet and carrying excess weight… but that’s a chat for another day!)

So, what are these specific, very targeted exercises?

I’ll refer to the master for this!

Is Long Distance Running A Good Form Of Cardio Exercise?

The Truth About Cardio Training

Longer distance running never really came naturally to me.

In high school, I was a sprinter. I liked that.

Then, the cross-country coach wanted me to join his ranks after track season. I did that for a couple years. It was fine, but I didn’t love it as much as sprinting.

My college roomie was (and still is) a fabulous long-distance runner. She introduced me to the next level of “fun” with longer distances. When I ran with her, we chatted and cracked up and generally had fun!

A few years later at a personal development camp I attended, we had to run several miles every morning, well before the sun even thought about shedding light on the day.

Something clicked then. Running became more mental… more of a ritual.

What really took me to the next level with running was dealing with my mom’s illness in the months leading up to her death. Running was my “me” time. I dealt with my fears, my sadness, my stress, my anger at “the system”… just by the repetitive nature of a long run.

In the years since then, the best part of a longer run for me is the emotional stress release.  Running is like an escape… time to get away.

Last ‘season’, I did fewer longer distance runs than I had in previous years. I found that anything much beyond 6 or 7 miles really started bothering a knee injury I had suffered a few months prior. So, I didn’t push beyond that too much.

This season, I had some thinking to do.

In the early spring, I was presented with the very tempting opportunity to join a group of like-minded individuals to train for a marathon this fall… all with a mission-minded purpose.

I actually signed up to ‘reserve’ my spot.

Then, I started planning out my training schedule based on a few well-known marathon training gurus’ advice.

The first thing that struck me was “How will I ever create the TIME to do this??” It seemed very selfish to spend that many hours each week, for so many months, training for this… and home school… and run a practice… and a few other businesses… and still try to be a good mom, wife, and take care of our home!

Then I started thinking about my joints… and the injuries that still hadn’t fully healed.

Then I started thinking about how out-of-balance my exercise and movement routine was beginning to look on paper as I was planning my training schedule.

Then I started thinking about the ever-increasing amounts of research coming out, demonstrating how long-distance cardio is inferior to shorter, more varied training sessions. In fact, it’s no secret that long duration, steady-state, low-to-moderate intensity cardio is detrimental to our health. Yikes.

I was really having a hard time justifying why on earth I’d choose to start this type of training… knowing that it goes against what I (academically and intuitively) know is best for my body.

So, I didn’t.

Instead, I spent the last few months mixing things up.

I started walking daily. Once, sometimes twice, per week, I’d add a shorter run of two or three miles. Once or twice a week, I’d do “burst” training by adding hill sprints or sprinting intervals. Two or three times each week I did resistance training at home, and did FitnessFlow Yoga regularly. I’d hit the trails for bike rides every so often, too. And, my favorite activity for the past several months has been stand-up paddling.  It’s fun, intense and challenging at times, while peaceful and relaxing when I want it to be.

In hind sight, I’m very happy that I didn’t venture down the marathon training path. It’s just not the right path for me… or my body… or my schedule… or my brain that gets way too bored too easily!

I’m not saying I’ll never do longer distances again. Who knows? For now, my body is happier – and more fit – with the shorter bursts of activity added to the foundation of daily movement.

I like that. MORE fit, with less time spent working out.

Current science has been perfectly clear. Shorter, more focused exercise sessions will actually get you better results when it comes to fat loss and weight loss.

Long gone are the days of “jogging” on a treadmill for an hour… and thinking that’s the best way to get in shape!

Shorter work outs are the way to go. How do you like that?! Now you’ve got more time for the rest of your life! Gotta’ love that!

The Paleo Diet: Benefits & Resources

In our practice, the most common dietary recommendation we will make to someone who:

– is having difficulty achieving optimal body weight

– has chronic pain

– has gut or digestive problems

– has food sensitivities

– has indication of chronic inflammation

– has allergies

– is experiencing depression or anxiety

– is hormone resistant

– has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia

– has a thyroid imbalance… and many other serious conditions…

is to adopt a more Paleo-like diet.

I don’t like the word diet, because everyone assumes it’s about weight loss. In this case, I’m simply talking about the food you eat.

Or, don’t eat.

The Paleo Diet, of course, isn’t actually a diet at all. It’s just the way things were for our earliest ancestors. It’s the type of real food that our real ancestors used to eat. They simply didn’t have diets loaded with grains, processed vegetable oils, and sugar, like we do… nor did they eat factory-made food that came out of boxes, cans, and packages.

Now, the world of all-things-Paleo has become quite the trend in the last couple of years. It’s the fastest growing eating plan worldwide. You see it recommended all over the place: celebrity doctors & nutrition experts, celebrities themselves, pro athletes, top chefs… it’s everywhere.

Paleo becoming such a hot nutrition trend has made our job easier!

For many years we’ve been recommending that folks with chronic health challenges eat a diet more like our earliest ancestors, and go “grain-free, dairy-free, toxic junk-free”, clean up their sources of fats and proteins, and ditch the sugar.

(Of course, we recommend the same for people who would like to avoid developing health challenges in the first place!)

It wasn’t called “The Paleo Diet” back then, and it just wasn’t always so easy to find practical support for these people when it came to recipes, meal plans, cooking & preparation methods, and so on. The surge of Paleo makes it super-easy to recommend countless resources to our people, thank-you-very-much!

It’s fairly predictable what happens when someone makes the switch to a Paleo-like diet. Usually, about a month later, they’re raving about how much weight they’ve lost, how much more energy they have, how their gut feels so much better, how they’re less bloated, how their pain has subsided, how their mental fog has lifted, how they’re sleeping so much better, how their skin has cleared up, how their libido has improved, how they feel less agitated and stressed… it goes on. It’s fabulous!

All this by cleaning up the diet… clean meats, veggies, healthy fats & oils, significantly decreasing sugar, controlled consumption of fruit and other ‘natural’ sources of sugar… and eliminating grains, dairy, legumes, (possibly) nuts, and the processed junk that passes as ‘food’ in our Standard American Diet (SAD).

You’ll see me refer to Paleo-like… that’s because some folks just can’t, won’t, or clinically don’t “need” to go fully grain-free and dairy-free. Even though I feel that, if someone’s health challenge is chronic, degenerative, or inflammatory, they’d benefit from a period of the elimination of grains and dairy, I also know that much of the problem with grains and dairy is the way our modern food system produces and processes these foods.

There is much benefit to be gleaned from traditional production and preparation practices, like raw whole dairy, as well as cultured, fermented, and sprouted foods & beverages. In fact, when the quality is superior, we can often see health recovery as a result of adding specific dairy products like these.

Anyhow, back to Paleo.

The number one complaint I hear from people in the early phases of their Paleo lifestyle is that they just don’t know what to eat or, more specifically, how to add variety to their meals and snacks. Even after they’ve experienced dramatic benefits and results from their new way of eating, they tend to fall off track quickly because they’re just not sure how to stick with it in the “real world”.

10 Ways To Build A Solid Foundation For Your Immune System

‘Tis the season… the “cold and flu” season, that is.

Actually, it seems there are two kick-offs to this much-anticipated season each year. The first is the back-to-school time, but the most significant seems to be November 1st… or the day after Halloween!

Since sugar is a major enemy of the immune system, the weeks surrounding Halloween, right through the entire Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons can be a very difficult time to keep our immune systems at peak performance.

In our family, I don’t sweat it too much if someone develops a simple cold a couple times a year – part of that is just seasonal house cleaning, in my opinion. The weather changes, leaves drop off trees, noses run. Seems like part of nature to me. It’s an intelligent “adaptation”… when it’s just a short-lived event, that is. When I see it drag on and on in some folks, then we’ve got other issues at play.

My husband and I are both practicing Chiropractors – we are physically touching dozens and dozens of people every day… down in their faces, getting sneezed on and drooled on and goobered on by the wee ones we adjust… ah, it’s a glorious thing! (Seriously! Love it!)

If the germ theory were accurate, I would’ve been dead a long time ago. So would you.

It’s all about the resistance of the host… the condition of the “inner terrain” that determines what the immune system will do with the various viruses and pathogens it’s exposed to.

So, how do we build a strong, resistant inner terrain to keep us healthy and lower our risk for illness?

There’s so much out there in the form of immune-boosting nutritional supplementation. Some of it is garbage. Much of it has some value. But, for me, it’s not practical nor desirable to take a dozen different products to boost or enhance the function of my immune system each day.

First, I’d rather take steps regularly, as part of my lifestyle and daily routine, that keep my immune system strong.

So, let’s talk about 10  Strategies for Building a Solid Foundation for Your Immune System:

1. More Sun!

One of the main reasons we see an increase in “expressive” immune systems during the colder winter months, in addition to all the immune-suppressing sugar that people tend to consume more of around the holidays, is the fact that we get less unfiltered sun exposure to make our own vitamin D. Without adequate vitamin D, there is less calcium uptake in the bloodstream… which is where calcium shines as a heavy-hitter in our immune system.

Even in the cold months, it would benefit us to make every attempt to get outside on those sunny days (well, everyday, really!) and soak up some sun. I can hear the whining from here. If you’re not a cold-weather trooper, and even if you are, it’s best to supplement with vitamin D3 during those colder, more grey months. The science is there by the boat loads!

Then, make sure your diet is abundant with calcium-rich foods, too, like greens, cruciferous vegetables, bone broth, and so on. (NOT conventional cow’s milk or dairy products!) It’s this vitamin D3/calcium dynamic duo that serve to activate the killer cells of our immune system and boost our immunity.

Most authorities on the subject of vitamin D3 recommend a daily does of 2000-5000 IU per day for maintenance… higher if your immune system is suppressed.

2. Support Digestive Strength

As we’ve been teaching in our practice for the past few years, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the health of the individual is intricately tied to the health of the “gut”.

In the case of immune function, this couldn’t be more apparent. Eighty percent of the immune system is in the “gut”! It’s silly to overlook this area when dealing with anything health-related, whether it’s the prevention of sickness, the treatment of an acute condition, or in an effort to recover from chronic illness.

There are many directions to take in order to restore and enhance gut health.

Some simple measures are to add a high-quality, broad spectrum probiotic to re-populate the gut with healthy bugs – these are your immune defense warriors. Another is to add the herb turmeric or curcumin. It has been shown to have positive effects on digestion, immune function, and inflammation… all of which are inter-related, so it’s not surprising they all improve.

For a growing number of people, years of unhealthy lifestyle and/or drug use has taken its toll on the gut. In these cases, more focused attention to the diet and the repair of the intestinal barrier are necessary precursors to re-populating with healthy bacteria. We work with different protocols in our practice for Leaky Gut and GI Wellness to accomplish these critical health tasks.

3. Green Tea

Here’s a simple addition to make. Green tea has many health benefits, one of them being widely-acknowledged support of the immune system. We don’t drink green tea as a “reactive” measure to “getting sick”. It’s proactive for maintaining health.

Stick to organic sources, and don’t mess up the benefits by adding sugar! If you need to sweeten it, add a bit of stevia or a bit of local raw honey.

We also keep echinacea tea and elderberry tea on hand, but they play second fiddle to the overall health benefits of green tea.

4. Keep Stress in Check

Easier said than done, right?
Our body is perfectly equipped to manage short-term or acute stress. It’s commonly known as the “fight or flight response”. When we’re in the acute response, the part of our immune system responsible for prevention of sickness and maintenance of health is down-regulated. We’re in survival mode, instead. Good stuff if you’re attacked by a pack of wild dogs while strolling down the sidewalk! Not so good, however, if the stressor continues long-term.

Chronic, un-managed stress wears down our immune system, as well as countless other systems and functions in the body. We will always have stressors… and that’s not always necessarily a bad thing. It’s how we respond and adapt to that stress that determines whether we will express health or not.

You know how this goes… think how often you’ve “come down with something” following a period of increased stress?

Particularly at this time of year, make sure you’ve got strategies in place to offset your stress. Cuddle up with a blanket, a cup of green tea, and a good book for some relaxation and unwinding. Meditate, pray, journal, stretch, go for a walk, take a bath, do yoga, sit in the sauna, play, whatever works for you. Intentionally create time to de-stress.

I also recommend adding certain “adaptgen” herbs, like Ashwagandha, to help your body manage ongoing stress.

I’ve talked about the Break the Cycle System here before. It’s a simple way to manage both toxicity and stress as part of your lifestyle. (Remember, toxicity and stress are two root causes of ALL chronic illness.) I particularly like Ashwagandha because it supports the production of white blood cells (the “soldiers” of the immune system), it supports healthy moods, and it has a rejuvenating effect.

Intentionally plant positive, health-enhancing, life-enhancing ‘seeds’ each day in addition to removing any unhealthy ones. Be intentional with your thoughts, words, and actions… they have a very real effect on your health.

5. Control Sugar Intake

I know I mentioned it earlier, but it bears repeating. Sugar is a deadly enemy to the immune system.

Obvious offenders are junk food, sweets, candy, desserts, and baked goods, but there are so many other sources of sugar (and its derivatives) to consider: breads, cereal, pasta, crackers, wraps, flatbreads, pizza, bagels, donuts, muffins, pancakes, waffles, pop, energy drinks, alcohol, ‘designer’ coffees, condiments, dressings, dips… and on and on.

The more you can reduce your sugar intake, the greater your health will be.

Don’t shoot the messenger… the messenger can get better with this one, too!

 

6. Sauna

Your skin a fabulous exit route for toxins, especially with a little extra help from you. I’m an enormous fan of the far-infrared sauna. If you can get one, or get access to one, definitely add this to your list of immune (and health) boosters. However, if this isn’t realistic, then just do regular skin brushing and exfoliation. Keep those exits open for toxins to vamoose.

Less toxic accumulation means more health.

 

7. Powerful Foods… Probably Already in Your Kitchen

At this time of year, I tend to do quite a bit more slow-cooking with an abundance of traditional immune-boosting and infection-fighting foods, like garlic, onions, and real broth. When these have been simmering all day in a soup pot or slow-cooker, the rest of the family is eager to consume them. It’s a simple way to lay a solid foundation for strong immune function for the entire family.

 

8. Raw Local Honey

The list of benefits of raw local honey is lengthy and impressive! (Not so much with processed, low-quality honey. Stick to raw and local.) Many of those benefits are immunity-related, from helping offset seasonal allergies to soothing a sore throat. Just be aware – even though it’s not refined sugar, it’s still a source of sugar. Keep it in check.

 

9. Chiropractic Adjustments

If you’re not already benefiting from regular Chiropractic adjustments as part of your healthy lifestyle choices, now is the perfect time. Ample evidence over the years has demonstrated the direct relationship between Chiropractic adjustments and improved immune function… and improved “everything” function, really!

When you remove interference from the “Master System” of the body (the Nervous System), it just makes sense that everything else will have a much-improved opportunity to function more optimally, as well. Simple, yet profound!

Watch what happens this “cold and flu season” if you get Chiropractic adjustments on a very regular basis. It’s a secret weapon!

 

10. Sleep

Get enough sleep! Chronic sleep-deprivation is a stressor to the body and brain. It triggers the physiological stress response pathways just like toxic food or massive stress does. Take it seriously and intentionally. It IS part of your overall healthy lifestyle.

Take advantage of this season of less daylight to get to bed at an earlier time.  The research is consistent on this one – getting to sleep earlier in the evening leads to better quality, deeper sleep than going to bed later and sleeping in.

Whether your focus is to maintain good health, prevent immune system meltdown, or recover from a full-blown immune “episode”, sleep is your friend! When we’re receiving good quality and quantity sleep, our bodies can heal and repair more effectively… and we can awaken more refreshed and better prepared to make healthy choices the next day.

Sleeping well means better health and stronger immune function. You know this to be true based on past experience, right? When you get too run down, things tend to fall apart on many levels. Oftentimes, we end up with an expressive immune system as a result.

Sleep well, be happy!

Staying Healthy in the Fall Months

The Truth About Health

Fall can be a quirky time. Especially health-wise.

One day, temperatures can soar into the 80’s, and the next day drop into the 50’s. Or maybe that’s just here in Michigan!

Of course, for many, school is back in full swing. Classrooms are full of living, breathing humans who carry a variety of pathogens around with them… and kindly share with others.

Without fail, we see an immediate increase in immune systems “expressing their health” as a result of these environmental changes.

In the summer months, most of us will experience an accumulation of “heat” in the body that subsequently transitions to “dryness” in the fall. As we move into winter, it’s that dryness that irritates the sinuses, drying out the mucus membranes.

The body’s smart, by Design. When the sinuses dry out, the mucus membranes respond by producing “reactive” mucus, which can be very beneficial… but it can also make a nice little breeding ground for viral or bacterial pathogens we’re exposed to when all those others around us share so openly!

So, in the fall and winter, we can tend to experience more sinus issues, colds, and even the flu. Naturally.

Sleeping in a room with a warm mist humidifier is a good idea for those colder, dry months. So is blowing that nose of yours on a daily basis, to prevent an “accumulation”.

Some traditional methods of healing make some simple, practical recommendations for staying healthy and balanced throughout specific times of the year:

On those nice, warm fall days, eat foods that are more “summer-like”:  fresh fruit & salads, smoothies, fresh veggies, cool water with cucumber slices, and so on.

On those cooler fall days, lean more towards those natural “winter-like” foods: soups & stews, steamed & roasted veggies, warm herbal teas, spicier foods, and other foods that instinctively add “warmth”.

For the overall health of our immune systems, as well as improved adaptation to life’s many stressors, I like the Break the Cycle System by Jordan Rubin of Beyond Organic… in this case, particularly because of the Ashwagandha, Rhodiola Rosea extract, and Green Coffee extract.  To this system, I’d add Turmeric or Co-Curcumin at this time of year, especially.

Doing the Break the Cycle System is a good way to gently cleanse and detoxify your system at this time of year, as well as helping with the stress of daily life. Easy.

Here’s an interesting recommendation from the art of Ayurvedic health: eat 2-4 apples per day through the end of October to help cleanse your digestive system, pomegranate to flush your lymph, and watermelon to cleanse your kidneys.

Fall is definitely a transitional time… a beautiful time. Many changes that happen in our bodies are simply healthy, natural responses to this transition that should be embraced, rather than drugged for the suppression of symptoms.
