Pharmaceutical Prescriptions ~ Just Because You Can, Doesn’t Mean You Should!

pharmaceutical drugs, prescription medication, cancer

pharmaceutical drugs, prescription medication, cancer

I got pretty irked with the system the other night. Which system? The medical-pharmaceutical system.

Shocking, I know.

I believe there’s a staggering level of  overuse and abuse of this system. I believe that the irresponsible way this system is utilized is THE reason the health of our country is worsening with each passing year.

I think people go to “The Doctor” far too much. The symptoms I hear people go to the doctor for just boggle my mind. I think people take far too many drugs. I think doctor’s prescribe far too many drugs. I think pharmaceutical companies produce too many drugs… and create far too many new “conditions” that “require” their drugs.

Yada yada.

The system ain’t goin’ anywhere anytime soon.

It’s up to us to be smarter consumers.

It’s up to us to take care of our own health, and reserve the use of the system for true emergencies and crisis care… because that’s where it at least has the potential to shine.

Not the case with the treatment of serious, chronic, degenerative illness. Certainly not the case with the prevention of these illnesses. And don’t even kid yourself that the system could possibly help you achieve “health”.

Taking responsibility for our health doesn’t go over real well with a large segment of the population.

So, the cycle of chronic illness, and the financial damage that results, shall continue.

Anyhow, I’ve uttered a few times in recent years, that I believe pharmacists play a critical role in the current “healthcare” system (sickness care is the accurate term).

Far too many times, I’ve heard of patients being stopped by a pharmacist who has caught the fact that this patient has been prescribed duplicate drugs by multiple doctors.

Gee, I’d hope that a doctor ~ someone who has taken an oath to protect the patient ~ would have caught this before prescribing yet another drug, but, sadly, that’s often not the case.

Relax. I’m sure your doctor is great and would never let this happen. It’s everyone else’s doctors!

But the other day, the pharmacist my dad goes to for advice (Lord help me) made a big mistake, in my opinion.

Let’s back up.

One year ago, my dad began using a catheter as a result of the effects of metastatic prostate cancer. Within a week or two, he began showing signs of a bladder infection. He ended up doing some lab work to confirm, and was prescribed antibiotics.

Nothing unusual so far.

I’m not even sure how this all unfolded, but I remember Dad saying his symptoms had improved a few days later… and then we let it go after that.

I made the assumption that “the system” would take care of it. After all, it was a ‘simple’ infection.

I can be naive when it comes to trusting the system, too, evidently.

Nobody followed up with my dad. He finished the  antibiotics and felt better. Not perfect, but better. He still had some symptoms, but he just assumed they were normal.

I dunno’. Hard to check on the details of someone’s bladder infection when you live in another country!

So, he had no follow up testing. No follow up doctor’s appointment to confirm that he was out-of-the-woods. Nothing.

When he told me he felt warm, then cold, then shaky, then light-headed, and so on, I had to make some calls and shake the system into action.

It wasn’t until I started making calls that I found out he had been left on his own.

Ultimately, his body hadn’t cleared the infection. It was now stronger and more gnarly than it originally was. Dad ended up with a serious kidney infection that wasn’t even ‘caught’ until after we almost lost him and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Amidst my fear and deep concern at the time, I seem to recall being a bit irked then, as well.

Fast forward to the present.

He just started using a catheter again a couple weeks ago. Guess what? Yep. Signs of infection within a few days, off an on.

I said, make an appointment with your family doc to get some testing and get on it right away this time!

So, like any good parent, he ignored me.

He waited a week. Then, went to see his “good friend”, the pharmacist.

My father is a very difficult man for me to raise.

After Dad shared his symptoms with his Pharm Friend, he told Dad,

“You need an antibiotic… usually, it needs to be prescribed … BUT, wait! Let’s see if I still have your prescription on file FROM A YEAR AGO… that would save you a trip to the doctor and the lab!”

Well, isn’t that convenient?! How thoughtful.

Are you kidding me?

Remember earlier I said that I think people go to the doctor far too frequently? Yeah, well, this would have been a time to GO TO A DOCTOR… NOT a pharmacist!

The Pharm Friend explained that, by law, it’s perfectly fine for him to take a prescription that’s previously on file and re-fill it… without any consent from a doctor needed.

Sounds perfectly safe to me.

You know, just because you can do something, doesn’t always mean you should.

Where is the common sense in this one?

I know it saves a visit to the doctor and laboratory. So, it costs the system less, right?

Not if he winds up in the hospital again. Or, worse.

So, this time around, we have NO testing ahead of time at all. Silly me. I thought we were supposed to confirm a bacterial infection prior to taking antibiotics. No doctor is even aware of Dad’s situation, so there sure as heck wouldn’t be any follow-up scheduled to see how he’s doing.

I had to explain this all to my dad the other night on the phone when he told me what was going on.

Imagine, trying to speak in a calming, sweet, nurturing voice to my dad… while I’m internally steaming and disgusted by the utter lack of common sense and responsibility Pharm Friend displayed… and also, as nicely as I possibly can, scolding my dad for not following common sense protocols!

Dear God. Is it just me? Or have these people completely lost their minds?!

This is not good for MY health, let along my dad’s.

So, I gave Dad a very clear action plan. (It has to be simple, short, and ultra-clear because years of drugs, cancer treatment, poor lifestyle choices, and chronic stress have done a number on his memory.)

I said:

“Call your family doctor in the morning. Make an appointment for this week. Make sure you have lab work done. Make sure you are scheduled for a follow-up, that includes more lab work,  within 2 weeks.”

“Oh, and stop going to your drug-pusher friend for health advice.”

Seriously. If you go to a pharmacist for any type of “health” advice, what do you think his recommendations will be??

Want better health and function? Ask someone else. Ask better questions.

Since many folks don’t seem ready to shake loose the notion of medicating themselves for every little thing – not that a bladder or kidney infection is a little thing by any means – we encourage people to take responsibility for one critically important piece of this drug puzzle.

Always ask, “What’s the exit strategy with this medication?”

You should not be on a drug forever.

Either it “fixes” the cause of the problem, or it doesn’t. (Good luck fixing the cause of a chronic health problem with a drug.)

In the case of an acute infection, the exit strategy is extremely critical. Obviously.

Or, at least it should be obvious.

Don’t assume. I learned that lesson the hard way!

If we start completely leaving common sense out of this drug equation, we’re sunk.

The soap box is now being returned to its resting place. :)

The Influence of School on Nutrition Choices ~ The Pendulum Has Swung!

The Truth About Nutrition

Our 11 year old daughter has come a long (interesting) way with her nutritional choices, preferences and standards.

Like so many young children, she started out great… would eat any healthy food I put in front of her.

(Unfortunately, at that time, I was still vegetarian and consuming food products made with modern soy, as well as a lot more grain-based foods than I’d eat now… so it certainly wasn’t all healthy.)

But the kid would scarf down any and every vegetable I could provide! Ah, those were the days!

Then, she went to school.

We had our nutritional battles. I became painted as the “bad guy” because I didn’t agree with her teachers doling out goldfish crackers, graham crackers, and pretzels every single day, or using things like Skittles and M&M’s to help teach math.

I also disagreed, openly, about the children being “rewarded” for good behavior with toxic junk food. Crazy, but I thought that feeling good about yourself because you’re doing a good job at something was reward enough! Nope, apparently, we need poison (ok, “tasty toxins”) to reinforce just how wonderful you are.

Ever heard of a star on the forehead, people?

Ridiculous.

Or, I didn’t pack all the packaged “desserts” and candy in her lunch, like so many of her classmates had.

I think I may have said, “What. Ev. Er.” Maybe not… because I was still trying to raise a non-sarcastic human at that point. Perhaps I just said that in my head!

Anyhow, this nutrition disaster happening in the school setting was one of the major driving forces behind our decision to home school.

Over the years, our kids have learned that owning a body comes with major responsibility. Give it good things, and it will do good things in return.

I’ve also taught the kids, the best I can, about balance and making healthier choices in the “real world”.

It’s not about being “perfect” when it comes to nutrition. I’d argue that nobody is, despite what their self-help books and programs say.

I used to have teachers and other parents on my back on a regular basis about “depriving” my kids of their childhood experience because I didn’t think an ice cream party for the class was necessary on a monthly basis, or a pizza party every time the class met a reading goal, or popsicles because they all returned their library books, or because I didn’t provide dessert for them, or juice boxes, or whatever.

Deprivation.

What. Ev. Er.

To shake this notion loose from my own children’s heads, we’ve focused on providing our body with what it needs on a daily basis… and not too much of what it doesn’t.

Maybe it’s to justify my own less-than-healthy choices on occasion, but I follow the “Never Say Never” rule.

I do not tell my children that they can NEVER have ice cream or dessert or tasty toxins. I have taught them that some of those things are just so utterly ridiculous in their ingredients that it’s not even worth the moment of pleasure they might have when consuming it. (pop, most junk food, etc.)

I tell them if they’re going to choose toxicity, make it “good”… like a homemade dessert, or hormone-free ice cream… or even the ‘regular’ kind on occasion.

Our motto for years has been, “Fuel up with Health FIRST“.

Give your body what it needs each day: clean sources of protein & fats, a plenty of vegetables, some fruit, and ample pure water. Simple.

If you think you might choose a tasty toxin at some point in the day, make sure you’ve fueled your body with healthier choices first. That’s all.

Having an ice cream party at school? Then make sure you’re keeping it clean up to that point – no grains with breakfast or lunch, no sugary foods, limited fruit, etc. That’s being a bit more responsible with your body.

Of course, they always had the choice to skip these events… but we sure wouldn’t want to deprive those children…

Being responsible with serving sizes is something else we’ve taught. You can try something, like a bite or two of the cake, or cookie… then toss the rest, or bring it home if you can’t find the inner strength to release the toxin! As a family, if we choose something less-than-healthy, we tend to share it instead of consuming full portions of it.

So, my daughter has become significantly more responsible with her choices over the years. She still likes to sample her tasty toxins when someone offers, but she has become far more selective.

I remember the whining that used to take place every time a restaurant server or bank teller or church leader would offer a sucker or candy. Not anymore. She’s a toxic food “snob”, evidently! “Why would I waste my time eating that?!” (In her mind, probably thinking, “Bring on the chocolate chip cookie!“)

Now, she’s coaching her younger brother. He’s not quite there!  He’s of the mindset that, “If it’s in front of me, it must be for my consumption.”

With our daughter, we’ve now experienced the nutrition pendulum swinging in completely the opposite direction of where she was when in school.

She is the food police.

This doesn’t work for our family, I’d like to point out!

If a meat choice is presented to her, we are riddled with questions and concerns, like:

“Is it grass-fed?”

“Is it drugged with hormones or antibiotics?”

“Is the chicken (or eggs) free range?”

Or, if there are grains…

“Is it gluten-free?”

“Is it sprouted?”

Heaven forbid the answer is “No”! Sheesh… she’s hard core!

So, while we appreciate that she has solid nutritional standards in place, we’ve been working to nudge that pendulum back to a place that is more ‘balanced’ and tolerant, without sacrificing her principles.

If we’re potentially going to have the opportunity to eat elsewhere, we say: You can always choose not to consume food that doesn’t meet your healthy, non-toxic standards. You can choose to eat healthy, clean food at home before going. You can bring some healthy options with you. You can select the least offensive item off the menu, or party-spread, or dinner table at someone else’s home.

What you may not be is judgmental or cranky about the non-perfect food that is available.

We’ve been working on choosing to enjoy the social connections without being (excuse me) anal about the food. Nobody likes the food police. I know this personally! It’s a fine line between sticking to your guns, and being offensive about it.

Where we live, eating at home is always the best choice from a health perspective, hands down.

But when you’re out and about, being social and living life with others, you’ve got to learn to go with the flow… within reason, of course. (I may not be using these words, exactly, when she’s off to college!)

Otherwise, we may never attend another family get-together, play date, wedding, or holiday gathering ever again! It’s impossible to be perfect! I’d rather eat some less-than-perfect food in the company of loved ones, than live in isolation with my grass-fed cow and organic broccoli.

I have no problem with one of my kids choosing not to eat because the food isn’t ‘healthy enough’. So be it. They can eat before we go, or wait ’til we get home. They’re not at risk of starvation anytime soon.

So, we’ll see where this pendulum lands. For now, it has been an interesting phenomenon to observe. It’s also a good reminder that life isn’t all about food… thank God.

Ready To Overcome Stress & Toxicity and Have a Health Breakthrough?

stress, toxicity, Beyond Organic, detox, nutrition

Here’s a follow up to the post I did earlier on the new system by Beyond Organic ~ Break the Cycle of Stress & Toxicity.

stress, toxicity, Beyond Organic, detox, nutrition

This is some great detailed information by a colleague of ours, Dr. Josh Axe, who also happens to be part of the nutritional brains behind Beyond Organic.

*****

If you’re ready for a health breakthrough then listen closely.

I want to introduce you to a man on a mission, Jordan Rubin.  Jordan is the NYT Best Selling Author of the Makers Diet and Founder of the cutting edge nutrition company Beyond Organic.  Today I’m going to share with you one of Jordan’s greatest discoveries. The health secrets for breaking the vicious cycle of toxicity and stress in your body.

These health secrets I am about to reveal can improve your hormones, energy levels, and your metabolism.

But here’s the Shocking Truth: just about everyone is unknowingly fighting a losing battle with toxicity and stress every day.  When stress and toxins build up in your body, it can increase a hormone called Cortisol which in turn can imbalance EVERY other hormone in your body sending your health into a downward spiral.

Now listen, If we’re going to break the vicious cycle of toxins and stress, we need to address the root cause and start right now.

First, let me share the secret on how to reduce toxicity.

——————————-

To reduce toxins effectively, the place to start is the gut. You see, many people think of their digestive tract solely as the mechanism by which your body digests food, but in reality, your gut is responsible for much more than digestion, your gut is “home” to 80% of your immune system.

Your gut must deal with toxic sources like processed sugar, radiation, pesticides, air pollution, chlorinated water, and chemicals on a daily basis.

Normally your body can handle some toxins, but because of the avalanche of 80,000 toxins we come into contact with every year, 90% of people will experience toxin overload.

How do you know if you’re burdened with toxins?

Here are some signs that you may be experiencing toxin overload:

*Fatigue

*Dark Circles Under Eyes

*Decreased Metabolism

*Emotional ups and downs

*Skin blemishes

*Difficulty sleeping

*Occasional digestive issues like bloating, diarrhea or constipation

If you have any one of these symptoms, your body may be storing toxins.

It’s for this reason you must support your body in cleansing on a daily basis.

Fortunately, there is a solution, and the answer lies in Terra Firma™.

Jordan Rubin has developed the most advanced detoxification formula of this generation.  TerraFirma™, literally means earth’s cleansing elements.  TerraFirma uses a cutting-edge blend of volcanic mineral clay, probiotics, unique prebiotics and cleansing minerals from the earth.

Terra Firma has a four-fold approach to detoxifying your body:

  1. Volcanic Mineral Clay – Works as a toxin magnet by pulling dangerous elements out of your cells and organs.
  2. Himalayan Shilajit –  Contains 80 charged minerals from the earth that have unique cleansing properties and supports cellular detoxification.
  3. Prebiotic Phage - Support the natural growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut to further improve your gut flora ratio.
  4. Probiotics - 3 extremely unique probiotic species that are heat resistant including Bacillus Subtilis which supports your immune defense, Bacillus Coagulans which improves nutrient absorption, and S. Boulardii which improves intestinal cell growth.

It’s these 4 incredible compounds that make TerraFirma a unique and powerful detoxification supplement that can break the viscous cycle that toxicity plays on your body.

————————–

The second step

in breaking the vicious cycle is to increase your body’s ability to fight back against stress.

As you probably already know, stress can wreak havoc on your health and cause your cortisol levels to skyrocket.  Cortisol can also affect how quickly we appear to age. In fact, a major factor in staying youthful in body and mind is keeping your cortisol levels balanced.

Also, increased cortisol levels and stress can cause a syndrome known as Adrenal Fatigue.  Up to 80% of Americans struggle with adrenal fatigue  sometime in their life.  In fact, if you experience any of these challenges you may be one of them:

Fatigue

Tension in Neck and Shoulders

Sleep Issues

Emotional Ups and Downs

Cravings for Sweets

and a Slow Metabolism

Even worse news is that although you may be eating healthy you can still fall victim to adrenal fatigue.

But here’s the great news: there is now a simple way to help support your body’s ability to adapt to the stress.

You see, through a synergistic blend of unique ingredients, the Adaptgen™ formula was scientifically designed to help your body better adapt to stress:

———————————–

Here’s how it works:

  1. Adaptgen’s first ingredient is Green Coffee Extract, contains an active compound called chlorogenic acid which has been shown to support metabolism by inhibiting the production of Glucose by 32%.
  2. Next up is Ashwagandha.  This adaptogenic superstar herb helps to increase your energy, reduce fatigue, and promote restful sleep by decreasing serum cortisol and naturally increasing the youth promoting hormone DHEA.
  3. And finally, to further enhance the metabolic effects of Adaptgen™, we’ve included potent natural extracts of Rhodiola rosea, which can increase the conversion of fat to energy and reduce stress on the brain within 30 minutes of consumption.

The two breakthrough formula’s, Terra Firma and Adaptgen form a powerful one-two punch, to break the vicious cycle of toxicity and stress.

Listen, the fact is this:

You can gain control of your health today, or you can allow it to continue to control you.  The choice is yours.

Break the Cycle of Stress & Toxicity!

stress toxicity

For years, we’ve been teaching about the serious detrimental effects of stress and toxicity (as well as deficiency) in our Wellness practice.

Essentially every chronic illness boils down to some combination of these 3 underlying causes. We’re talking illnesses like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, neuro-degenerative diseases, obesity, fertility issues, digestive disorders, and on and on…

stress toxicity

The effects of stress, toxicity, & deficiency are deadly serious.

Stress and toxicity, in particular, quickly become part of a vicious cycle ~ you experience stress from countless sources (food, environment, emotions, sleep deprivation, stinkin’ thinkin’, medications)… your brain produces excess stress hormones… you accumulate toxins because your natural detox pathways are over-burdened… you feel more stressed because you’re so toxic… this creates more toxicity and skewed cellular communication ~ it’s a downward spiral.

Over the years, we’ve shared various strategies and tips to help offset your stress and detoxify your system in order to reduce your risk for serious illness, as well as to start feeling GOOD (and functioning well) again.

Well, Beyond Organic has recently released a brand new system to help you even more in this area of your health. This is the newest protocol from Beyond Organic, called the Break the Cycle System and it’s specifically designed to break the vicious cycle of toxins & stress.

The system directly addresses the imbalances caused by excessive stress and toxicity, and helps protect your body against potential damage in the future.

(Beyond Organic is a revolutionary company founded by Jordan Rubin, developer of Garden of Life, author of The Maker’s Diet, and outspoken advocate for highest quality choices in food, nutritional products, and programs to maximize our health. It’s a company we stand behind in large part due to their unshakable commitment to quality.)

As the saying goes, “Life is 10% what happens, and 90% how you respond to it!”

Stress and toxicity are part of the North American lifestyle more than ever. You can take your own proactive steps to reduce your exposure, but they will always be there, to some extent.

That’s the 10% of “what happens”.

The 90% of “how you respond to” all the stress and toxicity just got easier.

This new system (that we’re using in our practice and with our “distance” care programs) helps your body adapt to the stress and toxicity that you’re exposed to, and ingesting, and breathing, and creating.

It doesn’t mean it takes away all your stress & toxicity… because that would be a wee bit too magical to wrap your brain around! It does help your body deal with the daily onslaught far more effectively.

Sure, there are other programs… other more comprehensive protocols that we utilize, too. But this system is a nice, simple, inexpensive jump start to getting your health back.

Get ready to lower your cortisol, balance your hormones, increase your metabolism, and improve your thyroid function!

One of the formulations in the protocol (“TerraFirma”) is like a magnet, sponge, and neutralizer for all the toxins you’ve accumulated, PLUS it defends against incoming toxins.

The other formulation (“AdaptGen”) provides invaluable adaptogenic benefits related to blood sugar, energy, mood, mental clarity, hormonal function, metabolism, and stress related cravings.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? It is.

To learn even more about the benefits of this system, you can watch a brief 20-minute webinar with Jordan Rubin and listen to him describe the BTC System for maximum health.

You can also take a look at what Dr. Josh Axe has to say about the program here.

Sometimes, Ice Cream IS The Healthy Choice!

nutrition, healthy food, cancer, ice cream

Sometimes, I think ice cream really is the healthiest choice.

nutrition, healthy food, cancer, ice cream

Yes, I’m a “health doctor”… and I’m not supposed to say those things. But, somewhere along the way, I figured out that we don’t have ALL the answers when it comes to health.

Sometimes, the seemingly healthiest among us dies at a young age from a heart attack, while the junk food eating, cigarette smoking, whiskey guzzling guy down the road lives well into his 90s.

Explain that.

Health and wellness is comprised of a balance of physiological, mental, emotional, and spiritual function.

I don’t think there’s a human on the planet smart enough to figure out all its intricacies.

This type of thinking allows me to justify the occasional ice cream cone. (Smile.)

There have been two ice cream-related episodes in the last couple weeks that have reminded me that health is not always so black and white.

Yes, I believe that overall health results when we consistently make choices that are “pure & sufficient” as far as meeting the innate genetic requirements of our cells… and we lose our health when we make “toxic & deficient” choices. But there are arguably some grey areas in there.

For example…

Ice Cream Episode #1

Recently my dad’s cancer has taken a bit of a turn for the worse. He received news that the cancer has spread more throughout his bones. His symptoms have also been slightly increasing… somewhat.

On the same day that he received this news, he expressed to me that he’s starting to get a little bit nervous or uncomfortable with the idea of living on his own in case ‘something’ were to happen, like him falling, for example.

The very next day, I called him for a chat. I wasn’t able to reach him, so I just let it go. The next evening, I called him at our regular time, and couldn’t reach him again. Normally, this wouldn’t be too big of a deal… but because of Dad’s recent concerns, I started to get a little nervous.

I called a couple of his friends in the area to see if he was there visiting. Nope. They both said they’d check in on him. Nothing.

I  didn’t hear back from him that night, but he called me the next morning once he retrieved my messages. This is what he said:

“You know… I was feeling a little bit better, so do you know what I decided to do? I decided I was going to go out and get myself some ice cream and go sit down by the lake to enjoy it while I watched the sunset! So when you called, I was very happy!”

For a split second, there was an annoying “health doctor” voice in my head that was about to blurt out, “Dad! You shouldn’t be eating ice cream… especially ‘conventional’ ice cream!”

Thank goodness that voice shut up. Instead, what came out of my mouth was, “Good for you! I’m glad you were feeling better… and happy.”

Amidst the all the garbage he has taken, been injected with, been radiated with, and so on… it’s hard to argue against one cone of ice cream.

The man has been through a LOT in his life. Seriously, life’s too short to not have ice cream.

Ice Cream Episode #2

Then, just the other day, another little ice cream story presented itself. The kids had just gone over to the neighbors’ house to play when I heard the telltale song of the ice cream truck in our vicinity.

Let me properly set the stage. We live in a rather unpopulated area, so an ice cream truck coming around here is a rare event.

For the first time in my children’s life, they saw an ice cream truck come down our road about three weeks ago. I wish I had a camera in that moment! They were frozen… in shock, I think! Their faces were plastered with looks of wonder, and disbelief, with their mouths wide open! They were just too taken by surprise to do much of anything other than scream with delight. Funny!

So when I heard the ice cream truck coming the other day, I hurried over to the neighbors’ yard to tell them it was here again. (Good mothering, I know.)

What happened next would have won me thousands of dollars on America’s Funniest Home Videos.

I’ve run with my children, I’ve played tag and raced with them, and I’ve seen them win plenty of track events. They are fast little munchkins. But, I have never seen them run so fast and so frantically as I did the other day when they virtually exploded from our neighbors’ yard to run back to our house to gather up some of  their ‘responsibility money’ to run back in time to catch the ice cream truck.

They each took on different directions one from the back of the house one from the front of the neighbors house head back to our house. One was barefoot and one was in socks… rocks were flying and dust was being kicked up as they sprinted with all their might to catch the truck in time.

It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen! I stood there watching them with the neighbor kids… and this time it was US with our jaws wide open in shock and disbelief. I could not believe the excitement that the ice cream truck brought on!

Just the vision of their hilariously fast running, and those faces mixed with panic and joy, and the sheer triumph for making it to the truck in time, has got to be one of my best memories of this entire summer!

Yes, it’s junk ice cream. I know it, and they know it. But this time, the happiness won out.

It’s the only time they’ve ever had ice cream from an ice cream truck… and they’re 11 and 8.  I can’t be positive, but I’m pretty sure it’s not going to kill them.

Happiness is part of health & wellness, remember?

Of course, the real score comes when your healthy choices make you very happy! That’s something to aim for, right there.

So, am I saying that ice cream is “good for you”? No.

Neither is sitting around feeling sorry for yourself and being sad and lonely. Neither is missing out on moments of sheer bliss and happiness.

Maybe I’m just looking for justification for my own occasional unhealthy choices. Or, maybe life’s too short not to have ice cream… once in awhile!

How Much Protein Do We Really Need?

protein, nutrition, muscle, weight loss

“How much protein do we really need?” Ah, yes. An age-old question asked frequently by those in the fitness field, the diet and weight loss world, by athletes everywhere, as well as by those doing their best to raise healthy families.

protein, nutrition, muscle, weight loss

I don’t think I’ll (fully, unequivocally) answer the question here… it’s one of those nutritional battles that will most likely wage on for years to come! What would fitness magazines write about if we ever fully solved this protein riddle?!

Well, let’s throw in a little common sense right from the start. While there are definitely some innate genetic requirements of the human species that we ALL share, there are also individual variances in the way our bodies function.

That makes it a little tough to say, across the board, how much of any one nutrient we ALL need.  We each have a unique cellular history and cellular “memory”.

  • there are current and past medications/drugs to consider that alter various physiological functions
  • our stress levels (and how we respond to and adapt to stress) play a significant role in nutrient requirements
  • certainly our age plays an important role
  • our current level of activity and energy expenditure is key
  • our requirements will vary depending on whether we’re trying to build lean muscle, or maintain it
  • underlying hormonal imbalances and cellular toxicity will impact our body’s nutritional needs
  • if we’re trying to lose excess weight and fat, we have different requirements
  • if you’re injured, you’ll have different protein requirements
  • and the rest of our diet (types of food, as well as quality & quantity) will have a direct impact on how much protein our body wants

toxicity, stress

The Most Powerful Nutritional Recovery Program for Toxicity & Stress

While I’m certain that differing recommendations will be tossed around for years to come, new research suggests that many of us most likely need more protein than we realize.

The current RDA is 0.8 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight. However, several studies indicate that 1 to 1.2 grams may be more protective against age-related muscle loss.

We don’t want to lose excessive muscle mass as we age. It keeps us strong, improves our balance, protects us against serious injury, and helps us burn fat more effectively, to name a few benefits of maintaining your lean muscle mass.

You may have already figured this out about me: I don’t have scales in my kitchen to weigh my source of protein prior to consumption. I know, you’re shocked! I like simple. I like intuitive.
If you’re more of a “give me some numbers, lady” type of a person… here you go!
I recently read this nifty little formula from Caroline Apovian, MD, to give you a GENERAL IDEA of how much protein you should eat “daily”. I think it’s more of a “big picture” recommendation that counts. Some days will be intuitively lighter on protein, while others may be heavier. I think that’s more realistic and natural.
1) Estimate your ideal weight. According to Dr. Apovian, this is how you do that: If you’re a woman, start with 100 pounds for the first 5 feet in height, and add 5 pounds for every extra inch.
For men, it’s 106 pounds for 5 feet in height, plus 6 pounds for every additional inch. However, if your ideal weight is less than 120 pounds, don’t eat less than 82 grams of protein daily.(How does that sound for you? Does it seem “right”? More individual variances to consider, I know!)

2) Next, convert your ideal weight in pounds to your ideal weight in kilograms.

Ideal Weight (in pounds) / 2.2 = Ideal Weight (in kilograms)

3) Once you know your ideal weight in kilograms, you can figure out a good number for grams of protein your body needs per day.

Ideal Weight (in kilograms) x 1.5 = Daily Protein Goal (in grams)

weight loss, fat loss, toxic fat, healthy eating, nutrition, exercise

Now, it’s time to load up on some healthy sources of protein… and fats. Protein is utilized better in our bodies when its accompanied by good fats. Fortunately, many natural sources of protein already have desirable fats in them: like meat, eggs, avocados, nuts, whole fat dairy, and so on.

When you’re choosing “cleaner” sources of protein, like non-drugged grass-fed meats and dairy, free-range poultry & eggs, deep cold-water fish, and so on, you’re better off NOT choosing only the lean cuts, or only skinless, or only white meat, or only low-fat and fat-free. We need those healthy fats!

All you “low-fat” and “fat-free” yogurt connoisseurs need to keep this in mind! While it’s great to get the protein in, your body wants the fats along with it.

If you can’t get cleaner, less toxic sources of protein, then you’ve got to make sure to intentionally add in healthy fats, like grass-fed butter, ghee, pure coconut oil, and fish oil/cod liver oil, for example.

Sources of protein to consider:

  • the obvious sources, like meat, wild game, fish, seafood, poultry, eggs, organ meats
  • traditionally prepared bone broth
  • nuts and seeds, as well as nut butters
  • avocados
  • raw, whole dairy, for those who choose to consume dairy and can (physiologically) tolerate it
  • traditional tempeh and miso
  • asparagus (4 grams per cup… nothing to sniff at!)
  • and, for the non-Paleo, non-inflammatory, non-weight loss crowd – legumes (paired with a healthier grain, like quinoa) – these can provide 7-9 grams of protein in 1/2 cup.
  • sea “vegetables” and sea weed have reputable amounts of protein, too.
  • there are some good choices on the market for protein powders, as well. I prefer whole food sources first, that’s all. :)

* Many ‘in the know’ say that plant-based sources of protein are not as readily utilized in our bodies… and some would tell you that, if it’s not from an animal source, it really doesn’t even count much in the protein equation. Take that for what it’s worth.

I’d like to give you something to chew on…

I’m not one to stress over numbers and specific “dosing” recommendations when it comes to food. I believe that the more we clean up our diets (i.e. the less fake, synthetic, processed, artificially flavored/sweetened/colored, factory foods we eat), the more intuitive we become with what our bodies really need and do the best with.

The little formula I shared here, as well as the gazillion others you can find online, is just a nice starting point if you need some general help here.

***

So, how do you stack up? Does it seem like you’re getting enough protein these days?

NEW! Back-to-School Bulk Pricing on The Healthy School Days Menu & Nutrition Guide!

healthy school lunch, healthy food, nutrition

Are you starting your shallow breathing at the thought of another year of packing school lunches? Wondering how on earth you’ll provide healthy, nutritious options all year long? Back-to-school time each year can be a glorious time for parents, no doubt… but it can also be very stressful for some.

healthy school lunch, healthy food, nutrition

If you’re one of those folks who needs some more “healthy food ideas”, or is wondering how to create a healthier diet overall for your kids, then let me remind you about The Healthy School Days Menu & Nutrition Guide. (And, keep reading for a NEW way to save some BIG bucks on your order!)

Don’t know about the “menu”?

I created it in response to the nutritional myths (and lies) my eldest child faced when she first attended school years ago. For the sake of my own sanity, and to preserve my relationship with my daughter (and not always be the nutritional “bad guy”), I created a FUN, geared-to-kids, 8-page nutritional guide that literally sat on our kitchen counter for our children to refer to when making their food choices on a daily basis.

It solved a LOT of problems at meal time and snack time!

The Healthy School Days Menu builds a solid foundation of nutritional know-how from a very young age… when ideas and opinions about food are being formed.

Strong opinions!

I originally called it a “menu” for simplicity’s sake with my own young ‘uns… but, in reality, it’s much more of a “Nutrition 101″ guide.

nutrition, healthy school lunch, back to school

**********

Here’s what some folks have had to say about The Healthy School Days Menu:

From a teacher…

“Wow! This menu is wonderful! It is very well organized, gives lots of choices to pick from, and most importantly, it teaches me how to feed my family more nutritiously!

I like the Golden Rules of Nutrition part because it gives me guidance in the pure choices I can make in a day, and it’s easy to remember when organized this way. I also think it’s really important that you identified all the toxins we put in our bodies. We can’t change to become healthier if we don’t understand the “insufficient” choices we’re making.

And, of course, your funny, caring, energetic, and intelligent voice shines all the way through, concluding with “Dr. Mom’s Kitchen Agreements”! Very clever!”  S. T.

From another teacher…

“It is great to see a menu that focuses on what we need and the positive effects it can have on our daily energy and lifetime health. Dr. Mom Online has laid out what we need to fuel our bodies, and how we can teach our kids to make better choices when it counts. I believe that most of us do not know what health really means, or how to go about achieving it.

Dr. Mom Online presents a wonderful menu for each part of the day, as well as snack times, allowing us to be the voice of health, rather than the TV, the internet, and the many other forms of media that are influencing us and our kids on a daily basis.

This menu could have such an impact, not only on our kids, but on the generations that follow, and the behaviors and legacy we (and our kids) will leave.

As a teacher, I’m excited to see a menu that schools could adopt, which would have a powerful impact on the ever-increasing problem of obesity in childhood and adolescent populations.

Thanks, Dr. Mom! I look forward to seeing your work show up in schools and homes across the country!”

Charles T.

“Not only does Dr. Mom Online ROCK and know her nutrition, she also knows how to make every child and adult want to eat healthy with her “Healthy School Days Menu”. Her explanations and reasons are written in an awesome, cheerful, and easy to understand manner. Dr. Mom Online’s “Healthy School Days Menu” is fantastic!

H.O. and P.O.

nutrition, diet, healthy food, toxicity “Health is a priority and I value sensible and healthy options, especially coming from one of the most genuine, intelligent, educated, and well-rounded individuals I know and trust.

Although this menu was originally intended for childhood nutrition, I’ve found these principles are universal and apply easily into my lifestyle, too! (And I’m much older than a child!)

Dr. Mom Online gets down to the basics of healthy eating for any age!”

M.M.

Pretty neat stuff, eh?

The Healthy School Days Menu has been a popular addition to households and classrooms for awhile now. In case you haven’t yet ordered one for yourself, or for grandma & grandpa to refer to when the kids visit, or for your kids’ teachers and coaches, or for your entire class or team… now’s a great time!

21 Healthy Ways To Give Yourself A Break

relax

In our crazy-hectic busy lives, we can find ourselves in a pattern of “go, go, go”, without every really giving ourselves a break. Often, there’s no plan for Rest & Relaxation, no down time, no time for recovery, no balance, and no “margins” around our list of things-to-do.

Guilty.

Ahhhh... give yourself a break!

Ultra-productive or not, when we get swept away by a tidal wave of busyness like this, it takes a toll on our bodies… and our minds, as well.

Here are 21 Healthy Strategies for Giving Yourself a Break.

Some are just occasional, while others we’d be better off adopting as a regular part of our new, healthier, more balanced routine.

1. Get enough sleep! This is a biggie. Chronic sleep deprivation is nothing to ignore. It leads to the risk factors of all chronic illness, since it’s a form of ‘toxicity’ and ‘deficiency’ to the body. Make the effort to go to bed half and hour earlier, or even more, if you’ve been a real night owl. These earlier minutes of sleep are considered the “golden minutes” by many health authorities.

2. Hey, you exercise junkies, take a day off from “official” exercise once in awhile! No, really… you will survive! I didn’t say you have to give up movement for the entire day, if you just can’t take it, but give your body a break, for cryin’ out loud! Lighten up with your exercise… otherwise, what’s the point?!

3. Along a similar train of thought, on occasion, replace your strenuous or “pounding” exercise with something less intense (and abusive!), like “flow” yoga, or walking, or stand-up paddling, or body weight exercises… not that some of these can’t be “intense”, they’re just less abusive to our joints overall.

4. Take a stroll where your goal is simply to go for a walk… nothing heart rate related or fitness goal-oriented, necessarily. Just enjoy being outside in the fresh air. Take the kids, take the dog… just enjoy. Go barefoot, if you can.

5. Relax in a sauna, if you have access to one… preferably a far infrared sauna. Not only is the down time good for you, but this is a fabulous way to detoxify by sweating out the toxins that build up in our bodies on a regular basis. Be sure to scrub ‘em off thoroughly after you’re done… and re-hydrate with pure fluids.

6. Commit to regular detoxification cleansing to reduce your toxic load and give your body a break. There are so many cleanses and detoxification programs to choose from nowadays… you can do short and simple, or longer and more comprehensive. Of course, over the long haul, I’d recommend you do a combination of both.

This 3-day cellular detoxification cleanse is the most popular & successful one we use with our practice members. (If you’ve got some chronic health challenges going on, you might choose to do an even more focused cellular detoxification protocol. Contact me if you need help figuring out what would be best for you at this time.) Even drinking more pure water, eating more veggies, and adding a quality source of fiber to a daily drink will help with ongoing detoxification.

7. If a ‘formal’ cleanse or detox protocol is more than you can commit to right now, there are simple things you can add, and simple things you can reduce, that will help in the overall detoxification process, as well. Add more pure water throughout your day, more veggies, and a quality source of fiber to a daily drink, for example. Reduce or (temporarily?) eliminate sugar, processed & toxic foods, and alcohol. Some will do well to decrease or temporarily eliminate animal products as well.

8. Instead of coffee, coffee, coffee, substitute with some green tea or a greens drink for a boost of nutritious energy. If you’re not budging from your coffee habit, keep it a morning habit rather than throughout the day. Add some healthy, brain-building fats to your coffee, like pure coconut oil (or MCT oil), and/or unsalted grass-fed butter. Skip all the artificial, toxic junk that you can add to coffee. There are less toxic options available (e.g. real cream, coconut ‘creamer’, etc.).

9. Get regular massages or some type of “body work”. Sure, massages can be relaxing, but they accomplish much more than that. They help our bodies release accumulated toxins, therefore contributing to our overall health in a significant way. Also, we cannot underestimate the power of physical touch. Massages can reduce anxiety and depression, contribute to better immune function, and, of course, reduce chronic pain.

What? You’re not a rock star… and can’t get a massage every day?! Excellent tools to work with on your own are foam rollers for overall soft tissue work, and one or more lacrosse balls (or tennis balls, etc.) that you can use to do more specific soft tissue work. Rock star, schmock star. We’ve got this thing covered!

10. Take a soak in a hot bath. Just the heat alone will relax your muscles and soft tissues. Add some extra goodies, like essential oils or magnesium salts, for bonus points… and massive benefits. By the way, topical magnesium is close to magical… especially if you have some chronic pain issues. The majority of us are significantly deficient in magnesium, and topical application of it is superior.

11. Pay attention to your posture at your desk or work station. Sitting at a computer is evidently unnatural for us human folk. It has become one of the most common causes of the chronic neck and back pain we see in our practice. Whether you work at a computer station, or just play on one in your free time, be aware of your posture.

Sit toward the front of your chair, both feet on the floor, with the curve of your lower back accentuated (it kinda’ makes it look like you’re sticking your bum out… but it’s saving your spine!). This might be uncomfortable until you restore strength in the postural muscles of your posterior chain. Keep your head back over your spine rather than hunching forward to see the screen. The same postural rules apply in the car, on the couch, at the dinner table… anytime you sit, protect your spine. Take regular breaks to lengthen and stretch your spine and surrounding muscles.

12. OK, while we’re at it… the less you sit the better! If you can do your work at a stand-up work station, even better. These are becoming more and more common. Sitting (and collapsing the spine) robs us of energy and healthy, happy neurological output from the brain… it sends skewed signals to the brain, therefore, we get skewed messages back from the brain. We end up feeling tired, sore, anxious, depressed, grumpy… yikes!

13. To help with some of that gnarly-ness mentioned above, start your day with “spinal hygiene exercises”, like gentle twisting, rotating, bending, and reaching, where your objective is to move each of your 24 vertebrae through a nice range of motion. This sends healthy neurological input to your brain, and your brain in turn will send different (more desirable) output – chemical/neurological messages that result in more relaxation, less pain, less stress, etc. Over half of the body’s neurological input to the brain comes from the area of the spine. It pays to take care of your spine!

14. Get regular Chiropractic adjustments. This isn’t in the “body work” or “spinal hygiene” sections because I consider Chiropractic adjustments to be much more – they stand alone. They’re body work AND brain work that we just can’t always accomplish on our own! Adjustments provide healthy neurological input into the spinal area (proprioception) that results in the positive and healthy neurological output from the brain that we desire. Massages, spinal hygiene exercises, and various forms of body work are all fabulous… but when the spine is subluxated (malfunctioning, fixated, misaligned, imbalanced, degenerated) a Chiropractic adjustment is top of the food chain! The healthiest, most intelligent choice is to combine regular Chiropractic along with spinal hygiene and body work.

15. Since we’re talking about your brain, reduce all screen time as much as you realistically can… especially late at night. Oh, and first thing in the morning, too! Reserve these times for more “sacred” things… like reflection, gratitude, and prayer. It’s fuel for the spirit. Why would you want to muck up the start of a brand new day, or the end of a day, with more stressful input to your brain? Silly. You will survive without a screen. There’s more to life! Think bigger.

16. What to replace your screen time with in the morning or evening? Try meditation or “quieting your busy mind”. Just be still… be calm… just… be.

17. Breathe. Practice deep, relaxing, restorative breath work. Most of us are shallow breathers… especially if we’re chronically stressed, busy, or in a hurry. (That leaves 14 people in North America who are not shallow breathers!) Try this during your “quieting the mind” time, or as you’re relaxing before bed: when you inhale, try to breathe in such a way that your belly expands as well, not just your chest. Hold it. Then slowly release.

18. Go barefoot. Let those little piggies connect with the earth more often… set them free! Countless studies reveal the many health benefits of going barefoot – it helps relax and ground us, as well as reduce overall chronic pain and improve posture. Try it! Go stand in the grass, wiggle your toes and relax. Smile. Life is good.

19. In addition to your cute little piggies being set free, connect with nature on a regular basis. One easy way is to observe (and appreciate) nature. Slow down and watch the sunrise, the sunset, the cloud patterns, the leaves rustling, the waves, the birds… whatever. There’s so much going on out there that’s far bigger than us. Connecting with nature is relaxing and stress-reducing, and tends to remind us of what’s most important.

20. Laugh. We’ve all heard that “laughter is the best medicine”. Not that I’m a fan of “medicine”… but it sounds better than “laughter is the best source of input for our brains that will result in optimal chemical, hormonal, and neurological changes”. Right? How often do you have a good, deep, belly laugh? Ah, they’re awesome! A good laugh changes everything… physically, mentally, and emotionally. We should go out of our way to find or create things to make us laugh. (Unless, of course, it involves investing countless additional hours in screen time! You sneaky little bugger, you! You thought you had me there, didn’t you?!) I do love a good comedy, though!

21. Play. We can be oh-so-serious, can’t we? We’re very busy people, don’t you know? Chill. Play! Act more childlike when you can. In a positive way, of course… not when you’re giving a presentation at work, or having an important conversation with your spouse about your relationship! Being childlike and being childish should not be confused! One is about lightning up and seeing the wonder in things again. The other might tend to make you feel like the universe should revolve around you… and when it doesn’t, your whiny pants never seem too far away!

Play games, play catch, play tag, use your imagination more, do something creative, create artwork and do crafts, jump on a trampoline, play in the water, play in the sand, play in the mud, play a sport… Play! Just have more fun with life and the people you’re sharing it with. Enjoy the ride… we never know when it’s going to stop.

How about YOU? How do YOU unwind and break the cycle of busyness in your wacky life? Please share!

Oh, and thanks for taking a few minutes to read… now make sure to stand up and stretch! :)
